As fast food employees, we usually get to take home food at the end of the night that isn't sold. Tonight they threw it away and didn't ask if anyone wanted it after it was counted. It pissed us off. What if a homeless employee wished to eat the leftover food that wasn't going to be eaten? There were like eight chicken sandwiches, a shit ton of fried chicken, fries, and biscuits. IT ALL GOT THROWN AWAY!!! They lost all that money anyways and just threw it away. I mean, what the hell?
The only time I worked in fast food was after a prolonged period of poverty, when I was surviving off of plasma donations and only had a roof over my head due to well-timed family problems. To this day, I can identify four different dandelion herbicides by taste alone- and that's AFTER they've been washed. I'd have to go out late at night, after house owners were asleep, and harvest them, because sometimes, they were the only calories (and no, I don't mean Calories) I'd have that day. It was awful.
Imagine going from THAT to seeing the amount of food that gets thrown away in a fast food restaurant. There were times I actually found myself debating the best place to grab a customer to heft them into the air and beat the snot out of a coworker (or vice versa) in the name of every homeless person on the planet.
We weren't supposed to take tips in that job, but I grabbed every cent I was offered- and donated it to the local food depository. If a place is just throwing it away because "that's policy", then the policy needs to be changed. Maybe you can't just give it away; okay, I can accept that possibility. But do SOMETHING.

If they give away food at night they won't sell at night. People will learn and wait. And it's a business so they need to do what best for the business. They need to be better at predicting demands and adjust the premade stock, so they don't waste.
Yes what you say is perfectly reasonable but their decision might be based on legal or economic factors. If workers think they can eat left over food - they might purposely prepare more food then they can sell so they can give it to homeless shelters or friends and family leading to more wasted future food projections. Another thing is if they serve you expired food and you get sick, you could sue them and they would have a public relations nightmare and might lose their job as managers and be fined and jailed too. You could also lie and say their food made you sick when you had a pre existing health condition that made you predisposed to certain health issues unrelated to the food they give you, just so you could have an excuse to sue them and take their money. I'm thinking that is why they don't give out free food.
I mean I guess it sucks
Obviously if the food was still fresh and met OSHA standards and was safe to eat then yes it should be given away.

Thoughtless and Self consumed people, rushing to get out saves 15 minutes and kills a “want too” attitude at work with customer….
Poor managerial skills and 15 minutes overtime….yeah that pisses me off. when i was in high school i had friends that worked at mcdonalds and taco bell. free food all the time and sometimes we'd give it to the homeless
When I worked in the restaurant 99% of everything made was prepared as ordered... only one wake I recall touched nothing so we just took it in tupperwares, I ate great for a few days
Oh, I thought you meant like food leftover from the customers.
Yeah, that's stupid. They're losing that money anyways, so they should just give it to the employees. I don't like wasting food.
Yes, that food is still good
I worked for a restaurant that sold pies, they would throw away pies after 2 day shelf life. All corporations care about is the bottom line.
Here I know it is illegal to give food to employees, they have to throw it in the trash.
Save the rats for food scarcity and low cost but throw away perfectly delicious non-rat food. Makes sense.
I hate wasting food
