Why are they called waiters if we have to wait on them wouldn’t that make us the waiters?

Because they make the "wait" happen?
I mean words with "-ers", if you're considering words like "dancers" "fighters" then ofc waiters don't make sense.. In these "-er" words, it's simply the noun doing the verb (in the word) But such words are not the only - er words!
You should consider "-er" words like a "lighter", it's called as one because it's the often the 'source' of ignition/cause of light/lighting up an object..
Shoes are also sometimes called "trainers".. I mean they're not the one 'training', but they make the training happen!
INHALERS!! Our respiratory system should've been called this! But no!! Just like lighters, inhalers are the ones that make the 'inhaling' happen/cause of inhaling. So waiters are the ones that make the 'wait' happen/are cause of 'wait'!
This is the most I could come up with😞
The English language makes no sense 😂
Yes. Now pls react to my opinion with a good sticker. It will give me points. I didn't write all this for nothing!
ok whatever
? they actually do wait on you. they wait for you to decide what you want to drink. they wait again for you to decide what you want to eat. they may also have to wait again and come back after you finally decide what to eat. they wait on you again while you are eating. they want on you again for you to put your card on the table. they wait for you AGAIN to leave. like... what more waiting could they do?
Not really because they get paid for that we have to wait on the cook and whatever conversations they want to have on the way with your food
okay and? they get paid because they're at their job lol
Exactly so what am I getting out of this
I’m spending money I gotta wait and it might not be the right order then I’m expected to tip
then don't go to a restaurant if you don't want to wait and make your own food?
LMFAOAOAOAO
I love how we call them servers as well & I love when your server takes your order & someone else brings it.
Technically they have to serve us the order in order to be a server
Awesome question.
Never thought about it until now. A lot of our language is like that. Outdated.

It originally meant someone who guards or watches out. So they watch out for your needs.
“waiting on” someone means bringing them things
Then why do we get the food?
Pathetic question.
Be kind. After all it’s free
