Some, if not most, commercial fruitcakes are disgusting. It's a cliche. Even the small pieces of candied fruit that you can buy in containers for making fruit cake are disgusting.

But have you ever had delicious, home-made fruitcake.

I had an aunt who used to make them every year. They were so moist and flavorful. And I loved the dates and whole candied cherries, as well as other favor explosions in each bite. That was when I discovered what a delicacy fruit cake could be.

This year, my wife and I are going to try making one with quality ingredients. Candied cherries, pineapple, ginger, orange and lemon peel; dried pieces of apple and apricot; large pieces of gooey dates; pecans; ...

Orange juice, molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, brandy.

If you're using candied fruit it's worth prepping your own.
I made carrot cake last week packed with pineapple and apricots and enough Cointreau to floor a Frenchman.

Actually, you don't HAVE to put dates in fruitcake. But they are one of my favorite ingredients along with the candied cherries. 😃

When I was a kid in Southern California, our family occasionally went for drives that went through a desert area. There was a large stand by the highway that advertised date shakes. My mom said she loved them, so we stopped and I got one, too. It was the first time I had tasted dates. OMG, it was delicious. From then on, anytime we passed that place we had to stop for date shakes.

I buy fresh Medjool dates every once in a while and eat them for sweet snacks. They are like candy but good for you.

No, I love all kids of fruit and I like a lot of dried fruit like apricots or figs. Fruitcakes not so much. I dont know how they manage to screw up fruit.

You probably tried one of those horrible fruit cakes they sell in stores. Or maybe the one you tried had brandy or some alcohol in it.

i do like them! but i'm on the paleo, so i probably will only indulge myself a piece this year. they aren't good presents though. i wouldn't suggest baked goods as presents.
