If someone asks if you drink, what is it that person is asking exactly?

To me I'm never sure if that means: do you drink alcohol? or if that means: do you go out to get hammered? Or even, do you regularly get drunk?

I can understand not wanting to be with someone who drinks all the time or if you're someone who's x time sober. But if the only time you drink is out at meals and you have a pint is that really a big deal, or is that not something you're on about.
