Short myTake on girly girls like me.

1. Girly girls are not all weak.

2. Girly girls are not all pathetic.

3. Girly girls are not all incapable of defending themselves/fighting for themselves.

4. Girly girls are not all dumb bimbos.

5. Girly girls are not all materialistic.

Girly girls are just people who like girly things like makeup, glitter, shopping, the colour pink, etc. This has nothing to do with their intelligence or how well they can stick up for themselves. It doesn't mean that all girls have to like these things too. It's not cool to slam them because you're a girl who doesn't do these things. You won't earn brownie points for not being into these things and being mean about those who are. It doesn't mean they're trying to enforce traditional genders or what have you. It also doesn't mean they expect all girls to be like them.They just like and enjoy these things just like other people like and enjoy what they like and enjoy.

Expect negative feedback on this one. I hate the term, "girly girl." Reminds me of a rerun of Saturday Night Live which was slanted towards homosexuality. Next, there is a time and a place for everything. If we substitute feminine for, "girly girl" then there probably is less of a derogatory tone to whatever situation involved. Being a time and place for everything I think glitter in your hair is appropriate only in certain situations. One does not apply for a job with glitter in your hair. I'm speaking of a professional position that is corporate. But I assume that the initial writer of this understands. In addition showing up for work in such a position is inappropriate.. You do not apply to MIT with glitter in your hair. Knowing how to apply makeup is exceptionally important because too much does give an inappropriate look. My bottom line is if you want to call it girly girl, I guess that's okay but you must not act stupid whether you are a girly girl or not.. Everything must be in balance and appropriate. The attainment of that balance gets you the desired respect. Sarah Palin had so much makeup on her that really want to call her a girly girl or a moose hunter dressed as a clown doesn't matter. She looked stupid of course she acted stupid too but that's just one case of my prejudice.. I understand what you're saying and I have no prejudice against your argument one way or the other. The only concrete part of the agenda I wish to add is that everything must be appropriate in the proper context and in the proper situation.

I agree, I love feminine girly-girls but that doesn't mean they are shy, weak, quiet, meek, subservient, etc.

I have friends of various ages who are very put together and feminine outwardly who are the opposite of these things.

Every girl wants to be pretty, classy, sophisticated... A beautiful lady and being praised and admired. That's okay with me. I will even take her out on a date!

However, when you are working or in a working environment - act like it. That means no heels in the kitchen, head gear on the site and do not put on a ton of perfume while you are in my kitchen. Otherwise, it's going to be ban hammer time.

A pity I could not introduce you to my wife. She graduated from Ewha. She was a wiz at math (to which she would quip, "Well, I am, after all, Asian"). She could read music like reading an email. She was fluent in four languages: English, Korean, Japanese, and Cat. On the girly girl scale of one to ten, I would say she ranked a 6.5 (at least 2 points deducted because she didn't like pink).

Seriously though, you are correct, Buchita, that college is no guarantee of intelligence (I am exhibit A), but it perhaps has a weak correlation with it.

I was like you, Buchita, when I was your age with regards to girly girls. They seemed ditzy to me. A non girly girl female friend of mine pointed out to me that it was mostly an act. My response to that was, "Why act stupid?" I think by the time they hit 30, most of them have outgrown the act. Who knows? If I had met my wife when we were younger, I might have found her insufferable.

So liking things is materialistic? Juts like how someone would like books or colouring or cars or dogs, it's just a like of girly things. That's the whole point. If that's materialistic then anyone liking anything is materialistic. People like things and girly girls like girly things. The point of this take is for people to stop stereotyping based on someone's likes.
