MyTake on Being An Identical Twin Sister

Number One: Don't ask me 'what it's like to be an identical twin'.

As I don't know what it's like to NOT be a twin, so how could I possibly answer that question?

"What's it like being a twin? Do you know what each other are thinking? Can you feel pain when your twin gets injured? Are you telepathic? Who's the oldest? How can I tell you apart? Who is the evil twin? Do you finish each others sentences? Do you want to have a threesome? Which one is better at ___?"

These are just some examples of the many stupid questions I get asked when people find out I have an identical twin sister. There is an important lesson to learn here about twins, even though we may look the same, have similar personalities and speak the same, we are individuals. We are different people and should be treated as such.

"Are you two twins?" Sometimes I like to say we just met each other that day haha.

Number Two: Stop asking "who is the better at ____?"

Twins have been together since they were conceived in the womb together. As a twin sister myself, we spent all our time together, shared a bedroom and were in all of the same classes throughout school. Everybody has always compared us, for everything, even now people still do it. I guess this is something that will never go away, as even me and my twin are guilty of comparing ourselves to each other. Growing up, our school reports would get put side by side, every single grade and comments from our same teachers were compared. How would you feel if every time you met somebody new, they asked you and your sibling -or who ever- who was the smarter one, or the sportier one etc? Stop comparing us, we are individuals.

Number Three: No, we don't want to have a threesome with you.

Every guy seems to love the idea of sleeping with twins. Just because we are comfortable around each other naked (our bodies are physically the same, or at-least very similar), doesn't mean we want to have sex with you. Stop asking. And no, when somebody sleeps with one twin, it does not mean they have 'technically slept with both of the twins', as I will repeat again, we are INDIVIDUALS! The same with dating, we don't share boyfriends or sexual partners, so keep your weird fantasies to yourself.

Number Four: I can't feel her pain or read her mind.

Its honestly so stupid the amounts of times I've been asked this, it makes no sense whatsoever. For some odd reason, people seem to think twins have these 'super powers'. No body else has telepathy or can feel others pain, so why would twins?

Number Five: Stop calling us 'The Twins'.

I'm not entirely sure if this is the same for all twins out there, but it happens a lot to me and my sister. We are referred to as "The Twins", by friends and family. But we have names, so use them! I know you may not be able to tell the difference between me and my twin sister, but there's a 50/50 chance of you getting the name correct.

Now don't get me wrong;

There are many perks to being a twin, like the unbreakable bond you form with your twin sibling, that nobody other than another twin would ever be able to understand. But for those out there who aren't a twin.. I hope you learnt something about identical twins from MyTake of being one. There's a lot more I would like to tell you, but don't want to bore you with over explaining. Just please, next time you meet a twin, do us all a favour, and don't ask any of the stupid questions I listed above!
