Show up early and look as comfortable settling in and taking up space as possible. Be polite and respectful, but stand your ground. For example, lets say your the first one there and you have your crap all over because your settling in and already have your bed picked. Now someone else comes in and starts asking you to move your shit. You respectfully just tell her sure and move only the things that are reasonably in her way. Introduce yourself kindly and tell her you picked your space something like "Yea, so I was thinking, I got this right here. Those two beds are free to take, you need any help?"

In other words you want to come across as someone who knows what they want, asserts themselves, but is open to talk about changing things up and will be fair. You know, like your not doing it for your ego. You have to convince them that you interested in keeping everything simple.

Just be the most popular, most independent, and desired girl in the whole bunch as well as the most social and respected. Being the tallest and the strongest might also help. You can be the most laid back and friendly about this. You don't have to be feared -- admired and widely loved would tend to work better.

Perhaps be the most emotionally stable and biggest person in the bunch -- the level-headed one that solves conflicts, the least insecure, the wisest and fairest. That's generally the most respectable way to rise to a leadership status. If some girl starts talking shit about you, you don't let it get to you. That might drive rifts and alliances forming within your group, but it's easy to ally with someone who doesn't let it get to them and doesn't even acknowledge false rumors.

It's a balancing act between give and take. To be the most respected and admirable requires kind of foregoing the mindset of being paranoid about what others think. Genuine independence means you have your own things to do, and people can follow you if you want, or not. Naturally if you end up wanting to follow other people all the time, you cannot lead. It takes initiative and independence of some sort, but also this quality that you're a free spirit who goes wherever she wants, does whatever she wants. No words are needed to try to convince other people of what you are if you do this right. It'll come across implicitly.

include your feelings about the thing. try to tell them how it makes you feel bad instead of trying to make them feel bad about it.
