When you call a random girl pretty do you expect her to say you’re pretty back, and if she doesn’t does that mean you’re ugly?

I am a girl and every time I tell a random girl she’s pretty like a cashier or someone I may see, they say thank you but they never say “oh so are you!” so I am paranoid that this means I am ugly. Or when someone calls you pretty are you just supposed to say thank you and move on? I think that just because they don’t say I’m also pretty, it means I’m ugly.

anytime a girl has called me pretty I respond “thank you so much, so are you!” And I mean it because I don’t think anyone is ugly.

I’m a very awkward person when it comes to compliments and I just immediately say “thank you” when strangers compliment. I don’t really think to compliment back, it just doesn’t cross my mind at all because I’m so awkward and anxious lol.


It doesn’t mean you’re ugly. Some people just don’t know how to response besides “thank you.”

No I don't expect it, but I usually say it back if someone says it to me. It's nice to boost people's confidence and make other women feel good about themselves.

I disagree with your premise... Just because you call a girl pretty, does not mean she should say the same thing back.. That is like saying it because you want validation from them, and life isn't like that!
If I pay someone a compliant i wouldn't dream of expecting one back.. In fact? if I got one back I wouldn't like it, because it would mean they felt under pressure to do so.

To me, a compliment is like a favor. If I do you a favor, I generally don't want or expect anything in return. It kinda defeats the purpose of doing someone a favor. Same as a compliment.
