Depending on the woman, it's either:

1. This fucking stupid "I can fix him" complex that hasn't gone away despite it no longer being needed in modern society (arranged marriages to possible scumbags aren't common anymore).

Or

2. The idealization of some previous era of masculinity/dominance that, by all accounts, didn't actually happen (the one where supposedly every man was a ripped, wealthy, smooth-talking, combat-ready sex God that we modern sissy boys can't even compare to).

Neither ideas are necessarily bad to mess around with in fiction, but ultimately we're talking about people who can't tell fantasy from reality.
