The question I draw from this question is: to what extent should society and specifically the labor market and work-week structure accommodate women's needs?

My opinion is that yes, women's needs should be taken into account but I am not sure if days off is the answer. It's a difficult question because you'd have to somehow quantify "the level of disability" a woman suffers from her menstruation. And from that, come to a consensus.

As a guy, I'm fine if it counts towards a sick day. I'm not a woman, but I hear it gets bad for some women.

Yes. Having is a period is not a privilege and being in pain isn't either.

Those who say no, have no idea of how painful and stressful having a period can be. Plus, no woman chooses to have a period, don't forget about that.

Recently I had a problem at work. I'm not sure why it happened. But a women that I used to get along with for years, just all of a sudden turned on me. We are now enemies! And I haft to avoid her, as much as possible! Since her turning on me, seemed to come out of no where, it makes me wonder if something hormonal wasn't the blame. It is common knowledge that periods effect women's moods. I once found an article by a woman, called something like: "How to keep your period from wrecking your relationships." Mood swings in the wrong environment can cause a lot of issues! Most of the time we guys just try to keep our mouths shut and stay away as much as possible. Maybe women should be allowed off of work for a time.

They are called sick days. My sister thought it was perfectly acceptable to take 3 sick days per month for her period because she was allowed, after a year they let her go, she's had the same problem in a few jobs but refuses to accept this is why she keeps being let go, of course companies aren't going to say that. Basically she is missing a whole month of work in the working year, no company can afford that.

I think it's a tricky subject. In someways yes. But how would that impact other workers who aren't off. What impact would that have on smaller businesses. What impact would it have on urgent projects or things like that as well.

I suspect there would be things regarding equality and what not as well to come up as women would essentially be having more days off a year. And yes I understand that it's for a thing that only women have. Would that be accounted for in their sick day limit. Would it be on a case by case basis. There would be a lot of things to have to consider.

Due to some of the stuff going on in the world there would possibly be transwomen claiming that as well but without the grounds as well they are not affected by it.

@Jumpintoadstool No, that is not what I am saying. I am saying that women want to be treated equally but they want to have special treatment because of a female specific condition. Doesn't this mean that women and men are not equal after all?

Equality of opportunity doesn't mean we can't take into consideration gender specific issues. You can acknowledge women have the right to opportunity in the work force. This doesn't mean we pretend there are not issues that are female specific that are worth consideration. Special treatment suggests there isn't a good reason for it to be there. This is not the case.

Thats called paternity leave, and that serves a purpose. Its so they can connect with the child they helped make. Menstruation is a female specific issue. You may feel this is unfair, but so is the fact that women have to endure crippling pain and bleeding every month.

@Jumpintoadstool yes, and every week there is money withheld from my paycheck to cover so called Family Leave. Yet when I requested paid time iff to take care of a sick relative I was denied. who decides who is family and who gets to decide who gets the benefit and who just ends up paying for it?

Ahh so the issue is you dont want to cover any reasonable accomidatuon if its for women specifically for a female specific issue. Maybe check that misogyny, friend. As for getting denied leave, that sounds like an issue with your boss. That doesn't sound like an employer who would approve leave for periods anyway.

@Jumpintoadstool The family leave act is run by the state,. The money comes from the money that is withheld from people's paychecks. Apparently caring for a sick relative is not as important as a guy staying home with a newborn. Democrats always call something that is not what irt sounds lile. Think of the Inflation Reduction Act. The state called this the "Family Leave Act"and it sounds like it was for any family emergency. Apparently I was mistaken, Once again, Thanks for nothing.

@Jumpintoadstool sorry, you sort of hit a sore spot. I just went through thid recently. I really could have used the time off from work. It was only for 3 weeks while he recovered from cardiac surgery but the state made up some excuse as usual so even though I pay into this thing every week I am probably not a member of a valuable democrat voting bloc. Most taxpayers around here are not.

I appreciate what you said however. My relative's surgery was successful. My wife ended up taking vacation time and we both took care of him. It would have been much easier if i had some time off with pay.

Ah, the exception. Since, in general, every women doesn't have some specialty disease requiring them to be off all the time, so if every woman is getting time off from work every month because they are women but all the MEN still have to be there and don't get this gender perk and I, as the employer and always having to deal with absences then definitely, I'll just end up hiring the men when I do my interviews. I wouldn't call them back or I'd say "we decided to go with another candidate".

It is hypothetical though. I doubt any law is coming down the pike requiring that women get monthly menstruation leave.

I see you feel women are entitled to this though. You feel women are so special they "deserve" to be paid to just be off all the time and it is our "obligation" to just hire them regardless of how undependable they would be in this circumstance. You are entitled to it.

The majority of women have physical symptoms associated with menstruation. My case is an extreme example, but make no mistake, even the average period cramp is intense. Yet we are expected to produce the same amount of work during this time as if everything is fine. This varies, of course, but I think its worth taking into consideration. Its not discriminatory because there is a valid reason behind it. Its not for shits and giggles. Women aren't having the time of their life being on bed rest because of debilitating symptoms beyond their control.

The entitlement you ooze is sickening.
The lack of self awareness too is eye opening.
We deserve this time off that men do not get... therefore we are less dependable and will be less productive then a male employee but you are supposed to hire us anyway because we are women. We deserve it! How dare you consider making a decision based on what is more productive and earns more money for the company.
We are woman! Can't you see we are holy! You lowly men, do your role, get out the and farm all the food, build and work in all the sewers, build all the buildings in the heat and cold, take care of all the plumbing, do all the electrical work, build all the roads and bridges, do all the carpentry, all the welding, work in the steel mills, work on all the oil rigs, do all the farming and grow al the food, maintain all of the infrastructure of the entire society and give me my paid time off at my indoors, air conditioned job sitting at a computer because we deserve it. I have cramps, hire me over a man so I can be less dependable and miss way much more often because we are entitled to menstruation leave at least 12 to 24 times per year.

Your blindness to how entitled you sound is scary.

Who said less dependable? We can work remotely if an option, and a few days out of the month is not a big deal. You as an employers would be expected to make reasonable accomidation for someone with a health condition or a disability. For some women, mestruatjon is a debilitating experience. They still need to provide for their families and they can still be excellent employees the rest of the month. Women also take maternity leave men dont get. Next you'll be saying thats entitled too. Grow up.
Furthermore, quit acting like women dont contribute to society. You are sounding very ignorant right now.

You never answered mine. Periods happen every month. That is 12 days if you take 1 day per month. 24 days if you take off for 2 days. Are you proposing that these days be paid days off?
Every company is different but the norms for new employees are usually 1 week of paid vacation a year (5 days) or 2 weeks of paid vacation (10 days). Some companies offer sick time too that you accrue the longer you work. Maybe 5 sick days or so per year. Not every company gives paid sick days.
So, first, are you saying you should get paid for these 12 to 24 days?
If you expect to get paid for taking off 12 to 24 days are you still expecting to get 5 to 10 days of vacation time per year also?

Dependable. Yes, That means we can count on your to show up and do your job and not be taking off all the time.
Taking off every single month is not normal... no. That is a lot of time off.
      I'm talking REAL LIFE.
You are talking about some fuzzy utopia where the world just revolves around you and how you feel.
