You’re 36-45, in that age range men usually have a wife, kids, family, maybe a divorce or serious breakup under their belt. So it’s most likely a genuine curiosity as to why you are single. Aside from that, it is one of the most generic topics for people to ask about on the planet, so I would absolutely not put any more emphasis behind that line of questioning unless the person was very specifically being flirtatious about it.
Like there’s no mistake that if a man approaches me on a night out, flirts heavily and asks if I have a boyfriend, this scenario is undoubtably leading to him asking for my number. But when it’s someone like a coworker making casual conversation, I am not going to put any excess thought behind that unless they’d given me previous incentive to consider anything else.
