Anonymous(30-35)+1 yDepends on what you mean by alpha. Personally I hate the word. I hate the very idea of its association with alpha-male hierarchy in creatures. It's the most oppressive, violent, survivalist mentality on earth.
Personally, I dislike the idea of having to go around flaunting my "strengths" just to "earn the presence" of a woman. That's old-style thinking there. The idea the women sit around and wait for a man to come up and appropriately "woo" her. Or the idea that the whole dating process is on the premise that a man needs to prove to the woman he has value, because she gets value right off the bat. A guy might kindly reveal his best parts to a woman, but has she done anything yet to deserve it?
The reason I say this, is because this is how the alpha-male heirarchy works. there are a few on top, and the rest are expendable, left to die single without anyone noticing. This means men have to fight and distrust each other every moment of every day, and the one most successful at manipulating his way to the top is the one who everyone praises as a hero. It praises psychoses and breeds violence and distrust.
Chimps have done this for millions of years, and have since become some of the most hostile creatures. Compared to the bonobos, who have no such structure. With bonobos, they all love each other and love running into other bonobos. Each member has value in different ways, and there isn't "one male getting all the attention and respect, while killing the others off."
The alpha-male system places some of the worst people into popularity, and degrades guys for displaying characteristics that are simply human, but not necessarily weak. Heck, many would consider men like Hawking or Einstein to be "omega". They changed the face of science, and opened new doors into technology and our understanding of the universe. What has your local "alpha male" done for society? Smooth-talked another girl into bed? Big whoop.
Thomas Jefferson, you know, the founding father who wrote the declaration of independence and invented a whole architectural system in his name? Yeah, he wasn't the most confident around girls. He had his problems.
And here's the real kicker: they say it's about confidence. You're an alpha if you don't stutter or get nervous when talking to women, but are smooth and know just what to say.
But think about this, why would a guy get nervous. Isn't it because he cares? Is nervousness not human? Guys are taught that we have to tone it down if we want to respect women. We're taught this by women. We have to be paranoid about how we act around women, unless we don't respect them in the first place.
Better yet, always going for the guy who makes the best first impression with confidence is the surest way to find the guys only looking at women as meat. You might get lucky and find the right ones, but it's generally the case a guy will get nervous because he's worried about his respect for you.
America is known for stupid standards towards men.56 Reply- +1 y
Great answer. The association of being alpha and being aggressive is ridiculous. One place where there are a lot of people with that mind set is Africa. Everyone there is out to prove they are the bigger man and there is little regard for traits of compasion and trust and a lot of regard for strength and violence. There is a reason why it is one of the most backwards and uncivilized continent and it is strongly linked to this obsesion with being an alpha male.

True power comes from the ability to trust and relinquish power. To love and understand others. To influence others, to have principles and be respected, without the need of violence or force. In the 21st century rule by fear and tyranny is a recipe for disastrous. Judge for your self as you see the uprising in the middle east as tyrant after tyrant gets overthrown by the people.
Opinion Owner+1 yYes. Heirarchical systems of social status only pit us against each other, and only value the ones on top of the social chain. More and more studies are showing that we are more like bonobos, with a desire to love and help calm people down. Darwinism belongs in the business world, not the lifestyle and dating worlds.

a study with apes showed that the beta males (not the top, but up there) enjoyed stress free lives, lived longer than alphas and still got to get a lot of female apes

+1 yI'm a give and take sort of person - I have my strengths and weaknesses and appreciate a guy who can sort of "complement" me in certain areas. It's nice to have someone who can take control concerning situations I have issues with (like bureaucracy), but can relinquish it just as easily when it comes to something I'm better at. Someone who constantly tries to take the upper hand in fields I excel in creates a competitive environment in which someone always ends up getting hurt (usually the guy, since I don't insist on doing things I'm not REALLY good at).
So, no. I don't like a classical "alpha male" - I like a guy who can be alpha if needed, but has no difficulties in letting me take the lead when the situation calls for it.21 Reply
+1 yI like a guy who can hold his own, doesn't take crap from anyone, and have great confidence in himself. Alpha males are known for these traits. They may also have a soft spot that no one except those close to them know about which makes them more interesting when you find it.

@girlsareconfusing It may not exist for you but it does for other men so don't talk for the other men.
As long as he isn't trying to be the dominate one in our relationship then yes, a relationship is teamwork amongst two people. I can stick up for myself but it's nice having a guy who will jump to my defence even if I don't need it, it's still appreciated.

Anonymous(36-45)+1 yI'm an alpha female, I'm not easily impressed by most guys but alpha males get me every time! I will fully admit that. They are the only type of man that can really make me want to be submissive and sexy just for him...other guys I kind of don't really care about. A lot of guys who think they're alpha really arent, this type of guy is rare. I naturally fall for masculine confident men, it's the laws of nature.

+1 yYes. I am very much a feminine girl, so I like the contrast. I love the old ideas of chivalry and courting, and I like a man who can make me feel like a woman. I go to school with a lot of homosexual men; they're all my good friends - so I like his contrast with them too. I'm a very strong woman (as people on this site know all too well), so I need a man who can handle me.

That's great!
Anonymous(45 Plus)+1 yYes,as long as he is a good leader and planner in the relationship and a very reasonable man,the alpha man makes me feel very secured and protected like a contented kitten as I am the submissive type.Confidence in a guy is very attractive to me especially if he is also very faithful.=)

+1 yI avoid them. I am an alpha female. I prefer beta. Alpha guys tend to be promiscuous and obnoxious.

Not necessarily at all. The two qualities do not go hand in hand with females.
I prefer an alpha male. Like many others have said, I too am very feminine and like the contrast that an alpha male brings to the relationship. To me, there is nothing hotter than a guy who knows what he wants, is not afraid to get it, and has the take charge attitude to get the task done!

+1 ya dominant man? I can't handle that. There will be lot of friction and fights then. I prefer a man who doesn't want to dominate, but doesn't take crap either.

+1 yAs gonyr mentioned, the life of a "beta male" is typically less stressful, and that's exactly what I've seen in my experience. I don't want to be with a guy who's aggressive and easily pissed and obsessed with his "manhood."
23 Reply- +1 y
being an alpha male means to be obsessed with your manhood lol! Is that what you think about that?
- +1 y
I'm just going with what most people on here define as "alpha." They seem to have a nature-based view of it. The guys on here who discuss being an "alpha male" are typically pretty invested in seeming as masculine as possible to intimidate other guys and attract women. But feel free to tell me your definition?
- +1 y
you nailed it. In a group of guys trying to get women alpha male will put down and attack others in order to get girl while beta males try flattering girls and tend to be more respectful.
I like confidence in men, but if it's too much and it makes them a jerk then a huge turn off or if they just can't stop talking about themselves.

Anonymous(30-35)+1 ywhats your definition of alpha?
typically yes, because I am a strong female and like strong men.21 Reply598 opinions shared on Girl's Behavior topic. there are three types of alpha males. Physical, mental, and spiritual, each having an advantage over the other (like "rock, scissors, paper" respectively). Someone should make a video game out of it.

Anonymous(30-35)+1 yConfidence is key to me, and alpha males ususally have that. But if you act like I'm a lowly woman, I'm the alpha female. There are ups and downs, but I'm a confident person and I can't stand shyness... too much. But I'd perfer
10 ReplyYeah, pretty much the only type I like (at least physically).
20 ReplyI don't think women realize that a fully alpha male never takes no as an answer if they want something.
40 Reply325 opinions shared on Girl's Behavior topic. I think so, whether it be subconscous or not a lot of the aspects seem pretty popular to women..
20 ReplyGuys don't because they get jealous and want to be the alpha male themselves.
Girls do because they are genetically programmed to seek out the best mate.00 ReplyI dislike all of the "alpha" "beta" nonsense. Those are dehumanising terms. Damn wannabe sub human apes.

Yes. And as it turns out, we might be emotionally pair-bonding and sexually polygamous. (Genetically, anyway. Willpower overcomes biology most of the time)
Is what I mean, is that we may have historically all had sex with each other a lot. It wasn't given to only the most powerful man, and women weren't sexually repressed. Everyone got laid.
I'll post a link to primatologist Christopher Ryan's study that shows we were probably never "alpha hierarchy" creatures in the first place. - +1 y
Actually humans are the Great Apes
+1 yI typically don't like them because they are always busy looking after number one - themselves. Big ego is a turn off when they are way into their pecs and bros.
