Is low self-esteem that big a turn-off?

Okay, so I'm fully aware that self-esteem is important and most guys want a confident girl for a girlfriend. But a recent bad experience with a guy has made me wonder: If a guy is physically attracted to a girl and has a decent number of things in common with her, can't he excuse her being a little down on herself and making negative comments sometimes? Is it normal for a guy to reject a girl solely for her lack of confidence and pessimistic attitude? Or do most guys just tell a girl that's why they're not interested in her just because they think that won't hurt her feelings as bad as saying she's ugly or weird or too much lower han he is on the social scale for him to want a relationship with her? And don't guys realize that rejecting someone for lack of confidence will just make it even lower and that a relationship with him might have been just what she needed to increase it? Just want to hear what different guys have to say and if low self-esteem is a common relationship problem.
