Can't read shy girl?

This is what I'm stuck on. I'm speaking/texting to her, and she does not initiate. She keeps the conversation going for a bit, then lets it die and doesn't say anything unless if I start it up again.

In person I notice her smiling most of the time I'm talking to her. Still, I was wondering if I was annoying her, so instead of just sitting next to her in class like I usually do, I asked her if she minded if I sat next to her today. Her eyes got wide, she got the deer in headlights look, and said no she didn't.

She also seems to not believe my compliments. For instance, I told her I liked her bracelet, and she looked at me confused but thanked me. A minute later I caught her looking at it puzzled.

So... what do you folks make of this?

i figured out a way to test this.. don't talk to her for 1-2 days and see what response she gives you physically or verbally.. if she looks disappointed or pissed then you know.. if she initiates conversation or asks you why you haven't talked or if you have been busy then you know...this at least lets you know she is interested in you... you could also just straight up ask her... I've done that before and the worst thing that happens is a couple days of an awkward atmosphere then straight back to how it was...

she knows your into her... you just have to keep pushing or find out if she is into you... forgot to add that

Rather than shy I think she's just not that into you... yet. That and combined with the possibility that she's not used to guys hitting on her make her unsure on how to respond.

LOOK , since I have been broken up to few times before , I now let the guy usually initate everything with me , it is mainly because I am not ready for any rejection anymore , and that idont trust anybody that much to begin showing interest if he didn't , so maybe it is the case here , she just replies when you initate it but she is too scared to start it if you didnt

She likes you. Have more confidence in yourself and take initiative.

As a girl I can tell you, that it is quite easy for me to initiate conversation with a guy I don't like, but it is very difficult to do that with a guy I like a lot.

So I think her behaviour indicates her strong feelings towards you.
