If someone you care about has passed away for the time that you are in mourn you can show that off to people in your environment by growing a beard. The end of the mourning period is marked by the shaving of the beard.

Hardship beard

It is not understood exactly why, but some men feel its appropriate, sometimes subconsciously to grow a beard if they go through a period of sadness or hardship. Because the man is preoccupied with his hardship, the beard may look a little rough around the edges. When a man shaves his beard, it signifies a victory over his hardship. It may also symbolize a rebirth or an awakening.

Protest beard

Growing a beard can also be a form of protest. When a man in the public eye who is known for being clean shaven suddenly grows a beard, it may invoke curiosity of the public. This beard then helps spread awareness about the cause the man is concerned with. The shaving of the beard is marked when the demands of the man's cause are met. The more men grow a beard in protest against something, or to spread awareness, this may create a social pressure. Wherever people will see beards, they will be reminded of the cause and its demands.

Aesthetics beard

This type of beard is a beard that's just there for looks. It may be altered as the man is experimenting with different styles. Every man must learn how to trim it properly, so in the beginning the beard won't look very aesthetic at all, unless he goes to a barber shop. The shaving of the beard marks nothing at all, it may not ever be shaven.

For me, from roughly October till just before Easter Sunday, I have a full beard. (As I do right now.) Then for the spring and summer months I go clean shaven.

My girlfriend likes it for a while, but the charm wears off and by the time it is time to shave, I have to say that we are both ready to see it go. In that connection, I have to admit - with apologies to my own gender - on the whole the trend right now for beards (and tattoos and ear rings on guys in various places) just looks to me increasingly lazy and slovenly.

For me, to start, it was doing anything I could think of to be a wee bit warmer in the miserable fall and winter months. I loathe cold weather and while I grant that a beard probably does not help much, it was sort of a mental consolation prize.

For my girlfriend, as I say, at first she finds it hot and sexy and different. She told me it is sort of very animal and raw. In fact, my girlfriend and I typically have a long romantic Valentine's weekend - we have been together for over ten years and have three kids. We leave the kids with grandma and grandpa and go out of town.

Lots of sex to follow and my girlfriend has said that the beard - sometimes - adds a touch of the primal and primitive to our sex. However, that, as I say, wears off and she is ready to see it go when Easter rolls around.

On the whole, we both preferred it when the beard was the occasional exception. Not the rule. So, to your very well explained and thorough list, if I could add one more. The seasonal beard.

It is a traditional thing in some cultures. It was a custom in ancient Rome and is still a thing in parts of Europe. Some jewish people do it also.

A man can use beard oils to make to soften up his beard. The it won't be itchy or scruffy. Though it may tickle you, which can of course also be annoying.

I grow a beard every winter to prevent frost bite when I am on the tractor and working on the farm. I'm outside for 10-12 hours a day in the winter. Where I live just other week it was -55 without the windchill. So any extra layer helps.

But in spring I shave it off with my old trusty straight razor

I might consider growing a ‘hardship beard’ just to see how large I can get it.

I did no shave November once and people thought it looked good. Downside is my skin takes a hit because I’m not getting the benefits of shaving cream and exfoliation of razors. So my skin gets more oily and my pores get clogged and look larger.

I can grow a beard but prefer not to. I use to get a lot of women. My girlfriend of almost 5.5 years prefer me without a beard. Obviously I look handsome. She as said it to me. Not every guy is going to look good with a beard, goatee, soul parch or mustache. Their are women who prefer the shaved look ove a beard.

Growing my beard was the best decision I've ever made. I find my jawline looks better, and I get more female attention. It also helps that it goes with the traditions related to my job.

It's also better to not have to worry about shaving in the morning

Mine started as a protest, my sisters kept nicking my razors (you girls should try shaving with blunt razors and you’ll get the idea). Now its part of me, cut to a No2 comb in spring through autumn, comb No5 in winter, always well dressed.
