Do shy guys really avoid eye contact?

Like say I am walking with a guy and a friend (who is a girl) and we are all talking.. the guy is kinda avoiding eye contact and looks forward mostly..
Also is it true that he might be more comfortable with the other girl because he has known her longer?
He sometimes seems to be able to talk to other girls easier than when it comes to talking to me... He is one of those people who is cool with everyone but he's still pretty quiet and shy,...

He might find you attractive and like you. But you might look too confident and intimidating to him and maybe you give him a lot of eye contact that he knows you like him and that could intimidate him xD.

I used to be like that before xD, even now when i'm pretty confident... i sometimes break eye contact with a pretty and confident lady who stares me straight in the eye for a long time (Although i reallly love when they do that). But then i get mad at myself for breaking eye contact and i go confront her after that lol

He likes you i think.. i m pretty same.. altough i succesfully makes eye contact with girls i like but when it comes to talking or hang around with them i just becomes superly awkward.. but i m pretty confident with other girls who r just friends..

yes, he is shy. He will improve as he times passes. Encourage him a bit, that will move things a lot faster. Tell him how you feel or give him some hints :)

I don't think they avoid eye contact simply because of eye contact. I think they do that because they try to avoid confrontation
