Usually when guys ask that, it means he wants to know if you're single because he might plan to ask you out. A lot of times instead of blatantly asking it'll be brought up in the middle of the conversation if it has some sort of relation to the topic.
That was a way to tell you that he is interested. And by the way, I read before that when guys talk to the girl they like they tend to lower their voice. Thats maybe another sign.

Could have been giving a complement or probing to see if you have a boyfriend because he's interested. A question isn't evidence and doesn't having meaning on it's own.
Here are some possibilities I can think of:
-he's interested and wants to know if you're available
-he's asking for a friend
-he wants to tease you about having or not having a boyfriend
He wants to know your available and he indirectly showing he isn't a scumbag because he's not going after taken women.
He wants to hook up with you, that's normally the case.
He is checking if you have a boyfriend or not - He might like you
Well, a guy asking that COULD just be curious... But in your scenario he was definitely flirting.
