Boyfriend has too much pride in the relationship?

My boyfriend is the type of person who has too much pride and sometimes puts me down around my friends and tells me I'm too sensitive and I should learn to take a joke when it kind of offended me and it had one of my friends bothered that he said that. My boyfriend knows how his attitude bothers me and still acts prideful. It's like he thinks of himself all the time and doesn't care about how I feel.

Isn't a boyfriend supposed to make you feel loved and cherished, instead of feeling insulted and ridiculed?
If you swap roles, and you are the one that always put him down and insult him in front of his friends, should he be taking it in?
