Why does my crush avoid eye contact with me?

Okay just moved schools, I'm new and its about 5 weeks in and theirs this guy in my homeroom class and in music class, and his spoken to me alittle bit... we weren't really that close but then one day during free time, I decided to sit next to him and we talked a bit but I noticed that he never looked at me, like a few times but not really.

Its weird because I would see him stare at me sometimes but when we are talking, he would barely look. A good thing to note is that he is pretty shy (his in my friend group but I always see him sitting alone or at least not as talkative as everyone else..

He is close with specific people and loud with them but around many, his super shy and quiet just like how I act tbh.

Recently I was at the locker bay and mine is right next to his and it was after this house performance and he asked me How was it (insert my full name)
and after some conversation about it, he said "Have a goodnight" and walked away.

I don't understand, He seems really nice but other times in groups he'll talk to everyone but me cause he barely knows me, but then he'll look at me but won't maintain any eye contact in conversation.

Is he mad at me or something?
