My guy friend called to check on me and at the end of the call, he said goodbye and that he'll see me on Friday (a hangout with me and my friends). I responded that I'll see him on Friday and I kept talking about how I had fun with him that time we hungout alone. He hung up mid sentence while I was talking. Then he sent this. Was he trying to end the conversation? Was this likely a fabricated excuse to end the talk?

The conversation was probably over as far as content and he was probably working out. Unless he does it often and in more convincing circumstances, don't stress. He just has shit to do. And remember, he did text you about it to let you know what happened.
