I’ve thought about the meanings of the various adjectives for telling someone you like the way they look. I Willa explain my hypothesis on them.
Pretty - Very simple. I really like the way you look to where I imagine holding you in bed or something.
Cute - This is a more heartwarming and innocent version of pretty
Gorgeous - I don't know
Beautiful - All of the above
I would say there is an element of all guys stretching the truth at times.

however he also may just saying it to ‘butter’ you up.

He wants to see your response. I bet he does it a lot as not to waste time. Depending on your response, he will act accordingly.
We tend to say that just to not hurt girl's feelings sometimes but its also possible that he really found you gorgeous
