Guy friend is insecure?

Almost a month ago I admitted my feelings to my guy friend & he softly rejected me by saying he liked me too at one point but he preferred us as friends bc he’s too insecure to be in a relationship. I know this is true bc around that same time I mentioned a male co worker I was interested in he got pissed off and insisted that I was gonna replace him & got emotional over the idea of “losing” me as a friend.

well today I told him that I appreciate him and he said that he has a hard time believing me bc he thinks that I’ll end up messaging him that I found a “new male friend” .. replacing him. I still have feelings for him but when he does this.. when he acts jealous or openly admits that he fears of losing me…it really confuses me.

i start to think that maybe he feels the same even though I know he doesn’t. Is there a reason he’s insecure? Is he just afraid of losing our friendship? Or is it a controlling thing?

he says he’s fine with me getting into a relationship.. but whenever I mention a guy I might be interested in he insists that I’m replacing him and that he’d rather say bye to me first so that it hurts him less.
