My coworker said today that he loves to always see me teased and challenged, why?

We are in friendly/great work relationship. We work very well together. He teases me all time but not in a negative way. He never misses to compliment my personality. But lately he is starting to challenge me a lot. He keeps on saying that I am a strong tough women with a unique attitude. Yet he teases me sometimes in the apposite direction. I am confused, about how I should react. When he tease me in a negative way, I shut down and don’t respond to him. After he notices that I didn’t respond he says that I was just joking nothing personal.

I don't know why he does what he does. He might not be trying to upset you. So you need to tell him that you don't like it when he does that as well as ask him WHY he does it.

Could he like you romantically and/or sexually? Could he just be a good friend and he just is giving you a hard time? Could he have more sinister motives such as being a narcissist and trying to shut you down and just say he is joking?

I think it depends on how he does it. I can't read his mind to know what he thinks or feels.

I think you should ask him why he does it. If he legitmatly feels bad for it then I assume that he isn't meaning to. If he gets angry with you and defensive or keeps doing it then that is not good either.

Just keep in mind he can't read your mind either you need to use your words
