Should I take this comment as a compliment or an insult?

I had a coworker come up to me and congratulate me on my engagement. He then said “Your fiancé is beautiful, what’s she doing with you?”
I laughed and said I’m a lucky guy. I don’t know if he was trying to give me a compliment or insult me?

I would have responded with 'I know, she's a lucky woman' but the comment made wasn't necessarily an insult. A lot of guys communicate with each other in that way. Sometimes they do it to test you to see if you're over sensitive too.

That’s what I feel like was going on. I didn’t want to respond negatively if it was just a teasing comment. Maybe he was just impressed with the girl I got?

Most guys have women in general on a pedestal so would think this regardless. I always hear guys at work talking about their wives 'putting up with them'. Men don't even see their own value... so it's likely he would say that same comment about most men anyway.

And a way for him to interact with her with a knowledge of who she belongs too... but still have fun with both of you. Nice Guy to me. And, you're right, here's an example 4 months later to him gets you closer to "got your back" at work given you're a decent guy. Great Opportunity for you from my perspective.
