He said “I love you”, should I ask what he wants to do with this friendship/relationship?

I’ve known this guy for 3 years. We have had a sexual relationship on and off since he lives 4 hours away but maintained a friendship the entire time except for when he was in a toxic relationship. Recently we have gotten really close again and he told me he loved me and why. Just this last weekend we attended a 4 day festival and camped together and he said it again multiple times during the festival. He even asked me to spend one more night with him at his place before I went home. He was treating me very sweetly the whole time.
I have my own insecurities which makes it hard for me to believe he’s telling me how he actually feels or if he’s just telling me what I want to hear. After we first met and I developed feelings I told him how I felt and it was just bad timing and I got hurt. In this situation should I push for what he wants out of this friendship/relationship?

I think he's being genuine with you. There's nothing wrong with asking for clarity about where he wants things to go. A big part of having healthy relationships is being able to express your wants and needs to your partner.
