Why does he flirt with me in person but then talk shit about me when I'm not there?

So I talk to this guy, we banter a lot and our conversations can be kind of flirtatious. The flirting is a bit one sided (comes more from him than me) and I tend to rebuff his advances... but in a jokey way.

He's called me "wife material" before, comments on my photos saying "so when are we meeting up?", calls me beautiful etc etc light flirting, right?

So the last conversation we had, we touched on some subjects. I find out that he went on live with another person and I think he joked about me having "daddy issues". He said something along the lines "Why am I going to take advice from someone who grew up without a father?" He didn't mention me by name but I knew it was about me because he mentioned something relevant to what we were discussing.

So I'm a bit confused? Its either you like me or you dont. Why do boys switch up like that?
