hey there is this guy that I like in my class, with other classmates we were planning out a future hang out when he suggested to bring his friends. I then as a joke asked him if they are good looking or not and he answered better than me speaking about himself. Do you think it’s a joke or that he might be insecure?

Hmm, this sounds like a question from someone much younger than 30-35 years old. I am not saying adults cannot go back to school, but the whole school and hangout thing doesn't sound like someone in their thirties. In any case, it could mean either.

I am just guessing really. It could mean that he has insecurities about his own image and that is his way of deflecting. It is not uncommon for someone to turn to humour to deflect their own insecurities.

It also very well may be that he was making a joke and trying to be funny. Not knowing the rest of the context of the situation or the tone that he said it, I cannot be certain one way or another.

If I had to lean one way, I would lean towards the latter theory of he was making a joke or trying to be humourous. Just reading it over a couple times, that is the vibe I initially get.
