Why would a guy keep trying to make his voice sound deep around his friend who’s a girl?

He's probably trying to impress you. Deeper voices are usually associated with more testosterone. Women tend to find deeper voices more attractive. The key word there is tend, some women prefer higher voices, others prefer James Earl Jones and it all comes down to the individual, but on average deeper voices are a sign of masculinity.

He is doing his mating call. No just kidding. I don't know maybe he’s trying to impress you or something. Sometimes though my voice changes depending on the situation. Like my voice gets deeper as I get louder and when I speak to someone in close proximity it’s soft. Hope that helps.
