to extent, people want what they can't have, but if the guy is not that keen on you in the frist place or he is a coward or whatver its unlikely to change. But if a man cares about you and is taking you for granted, it can make him realize he shouldn't take you for granted, so you shouldn't be too available to him, but generally its best to go with how much effort you get, that much you give.
