Why do guys tell you they dont want anything serious with you and then keep coming back?

I was recently hooking up with a guy for a few months but when I asked what he wanted out of our ‘situation’ he just said ‘i’m not in the right place right now for anything casual’, we had a open conversation about what we both wanted and agreed to move on as it hadn't worked out.
We have mutual friends and we see each other now and then in group settings, he keeps flirting with me when we do see each other and it just confuses me, why say you dont want anything with me and then keep flirting. Should i tell him to just leave me alone if he isn't actually interested in me other than a hook up?

Because the sex was good. The only way to make it work would be to go exclusive and take it slow. But I doubt that’s what he has in mind. And to be fair, he may not be consciously trying to play you. But I wouldn’t take that chance unless he gets serious.
