Well if that's the case and if he's putting his hands on you you need to walk away it could be many reasons it could be.

It could be he has a girlfriend and she's giving him ultimatums it could be that he owes somebody money. . if he has an ex-wife maybe she's bothering him I mean it can be a lot of things but he needs to be a grown up about it and communicate to you instead of taking it out on you if it's just because he doesn't like you anymore then you need to leave and he needs to leave and leave each other alone
It could, but I would say that is more the exception rather than the rule. I don't know why he's being a jerk, but either you talk to him about it and resolve it or you make a clean break. There's really no other option.
