Me and this guy I have been talking to have been trying to go out for a while but we both have kids. So our schedules wouldn’t allow us to do so. I happen to be free this weekend so I texted him “Do you want to take me bowling this weekend. I’m kid free.” But he texted back and said “I’m not kid free 😫” I responded and said “Aww. Well maybe another time.” Did I come off desperate? Or was my response/overall text normal and natural?

You said exactly the right thing. What you said makes sure he understands that you still want a date, and acknowledge that he isn't making an excuse in rejecting the date you just asked him on.
