What is going on through his head when he is staring?

I was eating a hot dog while him and I were talking. He looked at me, froze, and his eyes widen like a lot. His lips were parted a bit. (It was like a look of awe and it was cute) He was like that for 20-30 seconds.

This isn't the first time he has reacted like this, however, during that first time, when I caught him staring he would look away, and then try to sneakily glance back over.

Men, what are you thinking when you stare like this? Is it what I think it is?
