What would you tell your best friend if he told you that he now believed his world is a literal dream?

By dream I mean that his world isn’t real and that he’s not really awake.

Honestly, there’s not much you can say to help them. I’ve gone through full existential crisises over that same thought, nobody can really pull me out of it, it just passes over time. Sometimes it takes a week, sometimes a couple months.


The only thing I can say though is don’t screw with them, or make jokes like “you’re in a coma, wake up, wake up” it makes things so much worse. My ex said that to me when I was confiding in him and I went into a downward spiral.


The best thing you can do is distract them from their own head. It doesn’t take away the feeling that something is not right, that everything no is fake, but it does calm down the brain for a bit and can sometimes prevent them falling into a depressive hole and existential crisis.

A belief like this can be a symptom of a more profound issue. I would suggest therapy.
