We only started dating, and recently started talking again after a longer break. he called and it was intense, full of flirting and laughter, and he said for the first time that he really likes me and constantly thinks about me. But He mentioned his ex, that she really loves him, can't forget him and so on. I said so be with her if she wants. He said no, i want you. why is he doing that?

All this says to me is that he’s still in contact with his ex when he absolutely shouldn’t be, knowing that she still has feelings and wants him back. Make no mistake, he wouldn’t entertain any sort of conversation along those lines if he were really done with her, he wouldn’t even be picking up the phone.


My point in saying this is that you don’t want to be a rebound. I don’t know what your intention is for dating someone, but I’d like to assume it’s to potentially find someone you can be serious with. You’ve hopefully taken the time to heal from any past hurt or disappointment you’ve experienced, and are ready to start a new chapter with a man who’s also unpacked their baggage. In your age range, you’re wise enough to see the red flags, so be just as wise when it comes to acting in your best interest and walk away from a situation that could put you right back in a bad place you’ve already done the work to heal from.

Talking about an ex who still wants him can be a way to show he’s “desired” and see if you get jealous. Saying you don’t give enough attention can be a way to ask for validation without directly asking.

Neither is great communication. It puts you in a position to prove you care instead of him being clear about his needs.

A mature person just says what they feel and what they want. If someone has to use their ex to get your attention, that’s already a red flag.
