How to Workout and Lose Weight (For Free!) in 2016

So you have made your New Year's Resolution to lose weight and now the new year has begun and you're sort of scratching your head and wondering how the heck you're actually going to do it. Well, I hate to break it to you, but it's not going to be easy. Yes tv commericials, and every other internet website has convinced you there is some magical way to drop weight, but if you want to lose weight and keep it off, you have to take the hard road and put in, GASP!, actual work to achieve a healthy weight which you can sustain for the rest of your life. Let's get over the first hurdle which has you thinking that the only way it can be done is if you have a gym membership or pay a trainer. Not so. You can lose weight for absolutely no money at all and no gym memberships.

Here are several ways in which a free workout can be achieved

  • Free workout apps for iPhone/Android: This site breaks down some of the best apps of 2015 from diet help, to exercise apps, to tracking exerise/weight apps, etc. https://www.healthline.com/health/diet-and-weight-loss/top-iphone-android-apps#2

  • Library: At most of your local libraries, they carry exercise Dvd's which you can of course check out for free with your library card. If you can't find them in your local library, ask a librarian to help put them on hold for you so that the dvd can come to you via your local library.

  • Youtube: I cannot express how many 100% FREE workouts there are online. Go to youtube and simply type in a search for "free full workouts." You can find your more well knowns, like Beach Body, Jillian Michaels, Shaun T, to various trainers from gyms across the country who put together their own workouts. Look for workouts you already like to do like hip hop dancing, yoga, or weight workouts if you already own a set or two of dumbells or bars, but don't be afraid to try something new that you haven't done before like Bollywood dancing, agility drill workouts, or ballet barre. It's free so even if you end up hating it, you don't have to feel like you wasted money on it. Youtube workouts are chalk full of variety, so look and you'll find it.

  • Best Website: One of my absolute hands down favorite websites was created by a couple who wanted fitness to be accessible to everyone for free. There are hundreds of full workout videos. You can pick your desired difficulty level, which muscles you want to work, what type of training you want to do, the equiptment you want to use, etc. The workouts are music free so you can listen to your iPod or the radio while you workout. • Go to the Playground!: Most people have a neighborhood park close to them. Turn that into your gym. Seriously! Check out this page for some workout tips: https://greatist.com/fitness/bodyweight-playground-workout or this video:

  • Just About Anything can become a workout: People often think that you must dedicate 1 solid hour at just one time a day to working out or you aren't doing anything, but the little things add up. If you only have 15 minutes to walk around during your lunch break, take it. Park your car further away from the building, bike or walk to work, actively play with your kids or your pets, do some squats and crunches while you're binge watching tv. EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTS!

If you are serious in 2016 about getting your health on track, you don't need a gym to make that happen. People have been working out and finding ways to be healthy long before there was a 24 hour fitness on the corner! Stay positive, eat as healthy as you can, and workout for free and hopefully by the end of this year, you won't have to make getting healthy your new resolution for the next year.
