4 Disadvantages of Appearing Fit

1. Too Attractive

In a population of mostly fat people, a fit person can easily stand out. It's like playing Where's Waldo without the goofy red-and-white outfit. A woman with a slim figure and a beautiful dress will attract a lot of attention from both men and other women. For women who like to be in the center of attention, this is not a problem. For women who prefer a life of silence and solitude, this is definitely a problem, because the woman is put in an uncomfortable social situation.

2. Difficulty in Finding Clothes That Make You Unattractive

A slim woman who does not want to attract too much attention to herself may find clothes shopping difficult. Almost every single outfit will look good on a slim woman. Using fashion guides is useless, because too many fashion guides are intended for plump or plus-sized women who want to look thinner. Looking at the picture below, the woman on the right looks voluptuous or full-figured. The curviness is desired by many women. The woman on the left seems to have really big thighs and not much of a waist.

Again, for women who like to be in the center of attention and look attractive, having the ability to choose any kind of outfit or looking good without a strong fashion sense is not a problem. For women who prefer a life of silence and solitude, this is definitely a problem, because looking attractive generates too much attention.

3. Assumption That Your Lifestyle Is Imitable

If a woman has always been fit, then people would assume that she just has a high metabolism, good genes, or a proper upbringing. If a woman has always been on the chubby side and then appears slimmer, then people would assume that she has worked hard to lose the excessive weight. In reality, the woman's only reason for the fat loss may be her preference for the simple life and being an extreme cheapskate due to a high level of spirituality. She may be just living her life as a religious ascetic, and her fitness is an unintended byproduct of religious asceticism.

Religious asceticism is not for everybody. The main focus of religious asceticism is on faith, not secular or worldly concerns like sexual attractiveness or money. If a person wants to become a religious ascetic, then he or she must be a true believer. Imitating the lifestyle of an ascetic religious woman for a secular goal, like sexual attractiveness, may be against the teaching of the religion. Some religions have austere regulations on body modesty and plainness.

Furthermore, what is healthy for one woman may be totally unhealthy for another woman. Some women can consume milk; other women are lactose-intolerant. Some women are sensitive to gluten; other women have no serious health risks regarding wheat-based products. Some women cannot metabolize phenylalanine; some women have no serious health risks regarding products that contain phenylalanine or aspartame. Some women are naturally small-framed and proportional, while other women are naturally big-framed and proportional. Every body is different.

4. Overlooking Medical Problems

Normal-weight people may appear healthy and physically normal. However, an outward appearance can be deceiving. I have slim family members who are exactly like this. My maternal grandfather appeared normal and slim. He was never overweight or obese. Yet, he died of a heart attack. Similarly, my own mother was diagnosed with hypertension in her reproductive years. She thought it was a bit strange that she could be slim and still have constant high blood pressure. Medications and a low-sodium diet are the only treatments.

Too many people assume that overweightness causes Type II diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cirrhosis of the liver, heart disease, gout, PCOS, gallstones, and other non-communicable diseases. Although being overweight certainly is linked to the said diseases, this does not exclude normal-weight people from getting the said diseases. Refusing to treat an overweight person just because that person is overweight and deserves no treatment other than diet and exercise should be a medical malpractice. Likewise, refusing to acknowledge that a normal-weight person can have the said conditions should also constitute a medical malpractice.
