My Experience of Working Out: The Improvements and Things That Simply Didn't Happen

Everyone knows that if you want to increase your health and increase your longevity, then you need to be doing some form of exercising. Whether that be running three miles every day or pumping iron in the gym is up for you to decide. Many gym-goers will tell you how the gym transformed their life. It may be very true to them, but for me the gym hasn't really changed my life all that much. Although there are many things that they gym has improved about myself (i'll be talking about that later), it wasn't really "life changing". From the same guy who gave you Skinny vs. Buff men: Who gets more women?, I will be giving you my first hand experience of going to the gym for a year and a half and how it has improved my life and what it hasn't done. Let's get into it!

Let's Start Out At What I Use To Look Like Before The Gym

I started working out my junior year of high school. I was, what you would call, a "scrawny kid". Here's a photo:

This is a (very cringey) photo from my freshman year of high school. That is what I looked like all the way to my junior year of high school when I started to work out.

This is me now:

Now, by no means am I trying to say I'm jacked as hell nor am I trying to seek attention. This is only to show the year and a half progress I've made. Personally, I think I made some improvement, but it definitely (spelled it correct this time) isn't like one of those transformation videos you see on YouTube. I went from scrawny to this skinny/leanish body type. Here is what I've noticed through my year and a half of training.

Improvements

1.) Girls started paying more attention when I had my shirt off.

I haven't had any girls come up to me personally and say I look hot without a shirt on because one, I never really have my shirt off in public, and two it overall isn't that impressive, but whenever I post a question showing a picture with my shirt off, I get girls complimenting me. To the point where some girls damn near want to find my username and dm me. That just comes to show that girls do like it when a guy works out, even if you don't look really muscular.

2.) I felt better about myself

I felt a little better about myself knowing that I worked out. That after workout feeling is the best feeling ever not only because of that pump you get to your muscles, but just the overall feeling like nothing can destroy you.

3.) It helped whenever I was sad or angry

My Experience of Working Out: The Improvements and Things That Simply Didn't Happen

Whenever I was feeling down, the gym was always there. Whenever you're in the gym, you are focused on only yourself, not anyone around you. In the gym, It's your time to get shit done. Whenever i'm at the gym, I leave all the bullshit at the front door. What I mean by bullshit is things that get me sad or depressed. Being called weak, not having girls be attracted to me at school, the stress of doing classwork, all of that contributes to the bullshit that I simply leave at the front door.

Things That The Gym Didn't Do

1.) Made me more confident

As much as the gym made me feel good about myself, it never really gave me confidence like everyone says it does. I'm still a shy guy today and the gym never helped it. I'm not huge on going up and talking to girls, or anybody really, unless they come to me.

2.) Never made me angry

My Experience of Working Out: The Improvements and Things That Simply Didn't Happen

This is a good thing. I've heard stories of how the gym can make a guy have anger issues. For some people, this actually happens, but for me not really. In fact, like I said before, the gym makes me feel better, not worse.

3.) It never got in the way of things

A huge fear for newbie gym-goers is that they don't want to be in the gym for three hours every day. Also, they don't want the gym to get in the way of their daily lifestyle. I'm here to tell you, for the average gym-goer like me, It doesn't get in the way of things at all. The people who spend three hours in the gym are the people who want to be body builders. Really, you only need a good hour of working out. The gym should be a supplement to your life, not something that takes up your whole life.

There you have it. The things I've experienced over the year and a half of my training. I am obviously not huge, but I can give you guys an insight of my experience working out and how it improved my life and the things it really didn't do. Thanks for reading!
