Common Food Safety Mistakes

I made too much tea the other evening, so there was still some left sitting on the counter the next morning. As I pondered if I should drink it, I remembered how my grandmother caught me once and yelled at me for wanting to drink 'overnight tea' in my young teenage years. 'It's bad for health.' she said, but she couldn't quite explain why other than it was passed down from elders and we should listen to elders. Of course, the rebel didn't listen to her.

Remembering this and wondering, if there was some scientific explanation for it, I turned to google. It turned out the elders were right (this time). "Tea left overnight - even if kept in the refrigerator - not only loses all its protein and vitamins, but it also produces more bacteria, fungi-breeding nutrients which will harm your health."

Other foods that should not be left overnight are

- Cooked Mushrooms

- Not-Fully-Cooked Eggs

- Leafy Green Vegetables

- Mixed Salads

- and Seafood.

You can head over to this website to find out why.

So it turned out I'd been making more than just one mistake. I didn't know about the cooked mushrooms, leafy green vegetables and seafood either!

After some more searching, I found this foodsafety.gov website that listed the most common food mistakes, including the reasons and the solutions for these mistakes.

- Mistake #1: Tasting food to see if it’s still good

- Mistake #2: Putting cooked meat back on a plate that held raw meat

- Mistake #3: Thawing food on the counter

- Mistake #4: Washing meat or poultry

I only started doing it after using a recipe from Jamie Oliver that specifically said to do it as the first step. I thought it was more sanitary that way, because of him. Who knew a master chef could give bad kitchen advice?

- Mistake #5: Letting food cool before putting it in the fridge

- Mistake #6: Eating raw cookie dough (or other foods with uncooked eggs)

- Mistake #7: Marinating meat or seafood on the counter

- Mistake #8: Using raw meat marinade on cooked food

- Mistake #9: Undercooking meat, poultry, seafood, or eggs

- Mistake #10: Not washing your hands

Did you know about all these common food safety mistakes? Will you see that you won't make them (anymore) or are you a follower of the quote...?
