"But a drug is anything you take that are taking for a specific purpose. It's not different than saying caffiene isn't a drug."

"Anyway, listen, Lexapro is some pharmaceutical bullshit that gets doctors paid way too much. Don't be fooled; no one cares about other's like that."

"So telling people to take exorbitant amounts of vitamins and run to induce endorphins isn't the same as the process of finding the correct balance of just one substance?"

"Correct."

"Wait, what?"

"I said, correct."

"So mental illnesses don't exist right?"

"Well, only Schizophrenia, because anything with that name has to be crazy, but the rest are all just treatable defects. They didn't exist 50 years ago, you know."

"Yeah, but that's because we were ignorant."

"No, it's because we made them up. When people stopped taking care of themselves and eating wholesome foods they totally started suffering from the intangibles like mental illnesses."

"So just fix your diet and run a lot?"

Meds should be used if needed. Therapy, healthy lifestyle should be first lines of defense. Meds as well as part of the mix if they are needed and helpful.

Sure, all of these are attempting to rebalance brain chemistry, but there's a difference between working with your body and fighting it hard from outside. One is likely to have more beneficial side effects than the other.

I've rarely heard people say 'well i'm more stable since i took up exercise, good sleeping, and eating well, but I feel like I'm in a fog'.

The irony is that you actually work against your body when you push these things through them. Taking excessive vitamins or purposefully taking measures to attempt to feel happy is no different than taking ecstasy but can have long-term and not always that great effects. The myth of vitamins being a safe and intelligent way to handle... everything is born from a culture of nutcases with no degrees or understandings who care absolutely nothing for modern medicine. All of that and the reality is that you are putting yourself into a fog that just "feels good". Only difference.

Being healthy is a great way to start and drugs should not be given to everyone, completely agreed, and therapies and finding the reasons for the illness, whatever it may be, is wise but generally speaking beyond that point people still refuse to take their medications claiming it's in their head and that instead of feeling a little fog they'd rather go on a suicidal drift into a hole.

Oh, and when I say "suicidal" I'm referring to social status not actual suicidality. People with mania and MPDD and psychotic disorders and even those with hallucinations who stop taking their drugs are pretty quick to find out, despite being unable to really measure it, the faults of that behavior.

Excessive vitamins are not really different from drugs, though excessive is hard to define.

As for exercise, quite obviously most of us are far less physically active than humans were designed to be.

As I said, I think medications can and sometimes should be used. By ALL means get your ass in shape, get a good sleep/wake schedule, eat good nutritious food, do therapy. Should do those things, period. If that's sufficient, awesome. If its not, take the damn drugs if they help.

Excessive is easily defined if you view a textbook. The damage management system of overloading on vitamins is as old as our knowledge on food in general since that's sort of what we started with; knowing what you need and its toxicity levels was imperative. There's even an LD50 for these things with Vitamin C, the most famous, being the worst considering it's alternate name: Ascorbic Acid. It'll destroy your teeth and a hell of a lot more because it's acid.

It's true that many of us are not in peak physical condition but generally speaking being moderately healthy is sufficient and being at the top of your top is not required and will not help you fend off mental illnesses.

I think we agree. I would never suggest drugs as the first BUT using other drugs to supplement drugs designed for engaging mental illness just makes no sense. It's like trying to treat a broken arm by making a splint out of legos.

Yeah, I think we're basically agreeing, and I don't mean to suggest you need to be an Olympic athlete. But if you eat processed food only, sleep irregular hours, are out of sync with the sun, and don't get up and get active ever... that's not gonna help depression type symptoms.

The line is hard and black and thick too; there's a world of a difference between taking Lithium and taking Chelated Minerals or Fish Oil and guess which is more popular? The one that doesn't work. The moment it comes in an orange bottle with a prescription is the moment you get to throw on your shameful bib that says "I'm crazy as shit. Don't talk to me."

Oh, wait, what are the side-effects of excessive vitamin intake. That'll help.

So basically you have 6 vitamins, A;B;C;D;E;K. Vitamins B and C don't have any side effects since they are excreted through urine easily. A;D;E;K vitamins on the other have some side effects in overdose cases, such as orange coloration of the skin with vitamin A over doses. But generally toxicity is not easily achieved with vitamins since it happens at very high doses.
It is always more advised to have a well balanced diet than start with vitamin supplements, but to whoever may need them vitamins are safe.
And when i say safe keep in mind that a person can die from table salt if he ingested enough, but when was the last time that happened?
I advise you to talk to a therapist at least, they will probably refer you to a psychiatrist if they see you need drugs. But me myself have some struggles with depression from time to time. I try to work it out and not seek help, but a good friend always helps you out if you need him...

Hypervitaminosis is pretty bad actually of all the vitamins. You are of course correct that B and C are water soluble and leave the body easily but to my knowledge an overdose of vitamin A (retinol) can cause vision problems, nothing permanent, but it's one of the easier symptoms to begin to have. Headaches are a side-effect of all of them. Queasiness the same.

While the toxicity is hard to achieve for most people some are sensitive to the drugs or in poor states of health and are unaware; prolonged exposure to heightened mineral intake can damage things like the liver over years and so forth and so on because I'm a boring walking textbook. Nothing you said was wrong but I do want to put emphasis on the fact that it's not just minor discomforts.

Anyway! So you have bouts of depression? Have you ever been assessed for chemical depression or is it just cursory from time to time and doesn't impact your quality of life?

Well of course some people can be sensitive, but that is not the first thing I would say unless you or anyone else I was talking to fell in that category.

My depression is usually with stress. Life is not always easy anyway!!!

Well you definitely wouldn't need too much treatment if it's stress related. That's actually good and you're right, a friend is fine indeed; the best treatment if almost always LOVE! Don't quote me on that. Anyway, the reason I bring it up is because these people who are into holistic medicine suggest 1,000~2,000 ius of things like Vit. D a day. That's... not healthy. At least not over years without a deficiency if you're already outside getting enough anyway. Most of the diets are just outright made up numbers and because the layman doesn't know how things are digested anyway the build-up of these substances in the body can be disasterous. In a sense it's sort of like saying "Oh no! I want to save the world from it's insane cultist nutritionist preachers!" without using the words.

Me? I'm a different brand of All-New. I don't have any mental illnesses I just happen to be an estranged little thing.

Anyway love is very much so an extremely powerful medicine. It is one of the strongest positive elements humans can produce and actually does produce extreme differences in treatment outcomes but that's another conversation, huh? :p

It's not common for sure because many times people either have problems that were just going to show up and get agitated by the vitamins or they are just placebos but at the same time that's also something to worry about: Should people be taking drugs that do nothing for real problems? Not that it's bad if it works, it's great if it does, but the functional belief that you can actually cure X, Y, and Z with simple changes is dangerous when you're not "all there" to begin with, you know?
