If your SO wnated to get Preventive Mastectomy to prevent breast cancer, would you support her?

Prophylactic mastectomy is surgery to remove one or both breasts to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, prophylactic mastectomy in high-risk women may be able to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by 90%.

some doctors believe, this isn't necessary procedure for women, some doctors highly recommend it to women who have family history of breast cancer.

I'm not planning on having one :) I work at the hospital and i've met few patients who got the procedure to prevent the cancer and i was curious what you think about this :)

Health always comes first. Especially if a confirmed pathogenic mutation causing elevated susceptibility in the BRCA1, BRACA2, TP53 and/or another gene is identified. In that case, I would support it wholeheartedly. Likewise, if there is no family history or other suggestive evidence pointing to a high risk of clinical significance, doing a prophylactic mastectomy would pose significantly more risks than benefits and I wouldn't support it. However, whether or not she has that surgery is up to her, not me.

I would support my SO in having her breasts removed in the case you give. Her life is much more important than her boobs!

I agree that is may reduce the risk but I don't think it is that high of a chance. My nanny had her breast removed and got breast cancer 3 times from the age of 35-43 she passed away last year after it spread to her brain this time.

It would be more wise to get tested for the gene that causes breast cancer before cutting off your tata's, but if you have it, its a very wise and brave decision

I wouldn't support the procedure... but I would support her decision.

Firstly, I wouldn't want my SO to be boobless. I like boobs.

Secondly, I'm not in favor of major surgery in order to prevent something that might not happen. I'm not gonna go get my jewels chopped off because I *might* get testicular cancer at some unspecified future date. I'd rather let nature decide first.

Obviously, I'd talk to her and get to the root of her fear. You know? There's a lot of factors to consider - age at the time of the procedure, whether children will be breast-fed, quality of life, etc. Ultimately, it's her decision - but she'd have to pretty much prove to me that every single female family member has met an untimely end because of breast cancer, or I wouldn't buy it. I wouldn't want to let fear run our lives.

Plus, I really like boobs.

Well generally the woman gets tested for a gene that is very likely to cause cancer first. Say the chances are over 50%. Would you still not support the procedure?

Still wouldn't support it, no. But again, it's like with hormonal birth control - I'm against it but it's not a dealbreaker for me if she chooses to use it anyway.

How old are you, and when is it most likely to happen? I think it would be foolish to do it before having kids if you can afford to wait.

That's just kinda odd to me. I think angelina jolie had an 85% chance of developing breast cancer from that gene, and you still wouldn't support a girl to get a masectomy?
I know two women right now who are dying from breast cancer (stage 4, spread to lymph nodes) and I think a woman's life is at least somewhat more important than your desire to touch titties.

It would be a very difficult decision for her to make in consultation with her doctor (s). I would support her decision either way.
