Why do people say you can't get pregnant on your period?

I know it's less likely to get pregnant if you're on your period really, but why? Like what is it that makes you less fertile during this time? Is it just because you're losing your eggs right then so none catch the sperm?

Pregnancy occurs when the egg sticks to the uterine wall. Throughout the month your body builds upa wall to support a potwntial baby. During your period the uterine wall sheds and you flush out all that gunk. Your cycle starts on the first day of your period, on the second week of your cycle you are fertile and an egg is produced. Technically you can only get pregnnant on one day out of the cycle. However, the thing is that sperm can last and live in your uterus for 7 days... In some cases sperm can live in your uterus for 11 days! So yes, you can get pregnant while having sex on your period. There are other scenarios in which you can get pregnant on your period as well but those are more complicated. Google is great for this stuff if you have more questions lol! you have to be careful sometimes with google though. It's neat though that you have a health class. My schools "health class" was "this kids, is blue waffle and this kids, is what drugs do to you. Don't have sex and don't do drugs".

Yea Google does give me too much conflicting information. My sex ed was the same as cheeseysouffle, apart from they also taught us that we have periods and that means we can get pregnant and that's it lol... Nothing even about what periods are. They just showed us pics of fucked up diseased genitals and said this is what sex can do, that's if it doesn't give you aids and kill you.

You just have to be careful with your sources :) Websites like planned parent hood or kidshealth. org are both good resources! :) And yeah I thought it was cool too, better to prepare and educate kids than just go "Hey! Dont do this!" @cheeseysouffle

First off there is still a possibility of you getting pregnant.

As I understand it, you're not just losing an egg, the entire lining of your uterus is expelled from your body. You need the uterus for implantation to occur. The egg when fertilized and begins to divide. After a few days it moves down your body and then sticks to the uterine wall.

So if you don't have the uterine wall how can you get pregnant? Well it takes a two or three for implantation to take place and sometimes periods are shorter than normal. If you have unprotected sex a few days before your period there is a chance you could get pregnant.

Because you are shedding your uterus lining and the unfertilized egg. hence, nothing to get pregnant with.

Thanks. And if you know, how comes some women still do get pregnant on their period? Or is that maybe they actually got pregnant the week before or after and were mistaken on weeks?

I think what happens is that sperm can live 5-7 days inside the woman... so she is near the end of her period, has live sperm inside her, then for some fluke she ovulates early and bada boom bada bing.
