Well don't go for a run and then immediately try to go to sleep when you get home. Go for a run so that you're tired; then have a shower and have some time to wind down once you get home; but not watching tele or going on the computer; try reading a book instead, maybe do some stretches or something to helo relax. Don't get into bed until you actually feel sleepy or you'll just be lying there getting frustrated that you can't sleep and it'll make it harder.

Its going to wake you up because then all your muscles are working, your blood is running, you're sweating and your brain is awake. Try not to take sleeping pills because it will trigger an addiction and then you won't be able to sleep without them. Try reading or meditation before bed :)
Based on my experience, going for a run immediately before you go to sleep isn't a good idea, since your blood will be pumping and your adrenaline will be quite high. If you do it perhaps 1-2 hours before you to go sleep, that should work.
It will help only if you stop and relax for at least an hour before going to bed. If you don't relax for enough then you will be more awake.

running usually energizes me but if you do it for a long time and listen to slow music and go at a slow pace maybe.. you have to be tired enough to want to sleep
It will back fire if you go right before bedtime. Get that run in at least a couple of hours before bed.
I believe physical activity will keep you more awake.
nah... take a 1-2 hr nap better basically
