i was rear ended in a car accident and got a pained muscle on my back... it started tightening to the point that walking quickly or jogging was painful.
the doctor showed me that stretching that muscle area (you can look up stretches online) will help, and for fast relief, press on the afflicted muscle and keep pressing for 30 seconds. he pressed on my back on a muscle,
"do you feel any discomfort here?"
me, practically sobbing from the pain, "yes!"
him: "well, we found the afflicted muscle..."

A heating pad worked out a lot more for me than cold patches. I have a blood clot in my left calf which made the entire lower leg swell. I know it's not the same thing but I would suggest a compression sock or sleeve.
I think your supposed to bath in a bath of ice? It's supposed to help I'm sure. You can buy this thing from the little hippie kind of Chinese shops. It's like a menthol rub like Vicks an it really does help for muscle pains. It's so cheap aswel I'm in Ireland an paid like €5 for it. It's supposed to be like a massage rub but it helps with congestion an stuff.
Go to a vitamin store and buy potassium and taurine. Take 300-500mg/day of potassium and 2000-3000mg/day of taurine.
However much water you're drinking, drink about 50 percent more.
Cut down on caffeine and other stimulants.
If you wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, drink more water when you do.

The first thing to do is stretch and after you are done working out and your muscles feel tight stretch again.
If you are still cramping you can buy Biofreeze which work really good. You can get a bottle from massage envy.Eat a banana. It sounds stupid, but really. It works for me, even period cramps.
