609 opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. I'm not really sure about supplements. I know creatine can help muscles recover a little fast (our bodies already make it) so some like to take more of it. It would also cause you to gain water weight (in the muscle I think). Other supplements, I've stayed away from.
Protein is obviously necessary for building muscle and other cells. I think the importance of taking actual protein powder is heavily biased with marketing though. Protein powder will work for building muscle, but whey protein powder is just the fast digesting part milk that's refined. By refined I'll emphasize that there's little nutritional value other than the protein (which is usually ironically marketed as extremely healthy or a health food).
What I'm trying to say is a person can get all of the protein they need to build muscle with whole foods. I use protein powder sparingly as a substitute when I don't have protein in a meal.
Also it may help you to know whey protein powder is a 'complete' protein (which means our bodies can't synthesize the essential amino acids in the protein). Our bodies need different types of protein (amino acids) and not all foods have the essential ones (that just means our bodies can't convert other amino acids into those certain 'essential' types). Most meats and animal based foods like milk have the those while most other foods don't (like fruits, veggies or grains)00 Reply

+1 yNo.. not at all. Supplement companies will typically scam you out of money. They advertise fitness models.. male & female that are using anabolic steroids to maintain their look. Whey protein has it's benefits but nothing will ever replace real food. People should stop buying artificial protein powders and just eat a good steak or some chicken breast post workout. If anything a lot of these protein powders/bars have a lot of sugar and artificial preservatives that will cause you to retain water which is not a good look.

Yeah I thought so, I'm following a fitness program on Bodybuilding. com and they keep on promoting these Protein powders so it got me wondering :x :p

Bodybuilding. com and it's supplement lines are a joke lol. Don't buy into it. One of the fitness models that frequently does work on the website for different supplements is a fake natty. His username is Barn01(you can look him up). I ended up calling him out in front of the whole BB community and it caused a bunch of controversy.. I embarrassed the hell out of him pretty much ruined his reputation lol. Truth is that he is a frauding dumbass that doesn't really know anything as to what goes in those supplements that he is selling.. he just uses steroids and tells people to buy stuff so they can look like him. It's all a scam. Fitness industry is a fcked up like that. Don't buy into it.

Their programs are legit though.. Just don't buy the supplements.

steak after a workout isn't good cuz of the fat... chicken can be a better option if the its breat cuz its lower in fat the reason why whey is best after a workout cuz of the digetion time.. steak and chicken is a solid food slowing digestion time

@convo_king89 The proclaimed drastic insulin spike is just a broscience myth. While it's true that after heavy exercise your body is more sespictal to glycogen conversion it's to a lesser extent as to what people think. Whey protein is not all equal either.. Whey comes in a complex form which is not all digested at a fast pace. Whey isolates are great.. but as I was saying before it's almost minutiae unless you are a bodybuilder with sub 11% bodyfat and can notice these small things. As a healthy 20 year old female I wouldn't recommend her spending $70 on a quality whey isolate. It would be more beneficial for her to drink some grape juice post workout with a wholesome protein source.

@convo_king89 Let's also get this preconceived notion that fats are bad because it's qutie the opposite. It plays a vital role in your hormonal response to training. Fat is also very important for proper functioning of the human body in general. Fat serves as a storage substance for the extra calories we consume. It fills the fat cells that help insulate the body and protects our organs from injury. Our skin's health and hair are nourished by the fat we eat. Fat plays a major role in the bloodstream by absorbing and transporting the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. If anything nutrients are absorbed best post workout so it would be ideal to consume your fats during that window. I can post sources if you like.

i didn't say fat is bad its just bad after a workout.. and whey protien doesn't have to cost 70 bucks.. Eas from any grocery store i think would cost like 15 or 20.. and grape juice is bad after workout due to the high about of frutose which is bad for produceing glycogen...
- +1 y
@convo_king89 A natural grape juice typically doesn't contain any fructose cane syrup or any junk like that. As I was explaining before your body is more susceptible to glycogen conversion.. it would actually replenish her glycogen thus increasing protein synthesis and have for a better absorption of nutrients. The grape juice would work as an active transport absorption in that the nutrients requires a helper/carrier molecule to get it through the intestinal wall out into general circulation. She would most likely absorb more of Vitamin A, D, E, and K as these are fat soluble sources rather than vitamin B or C because those are digested through passive diffusion and are water soluble. It would make the digestion intensify through the action of hydrochloric acid as well as enzymes like protease. As I've listed the benefits of fat.. it would be ideal to eat fats during this anabolic window for the best absorption and break down of the enzymes to the small intestines.

@convo_king89 As for buying cheap whey protein powder I would argue that the negatives outweigh the benefits. Cheaper protein powders are completely saturated artificial sweeteners that cause you to retain water and also contribute to a lot of other negative health factors that would work against you trying to build a lean body. Your body is a Ferrari.. Don't fuel it with 87 octane.

Thanks for the advice, !!! Can I ask you another question? If I don't take supplements after the workout to help recover your muscles, what can I eat instead? And should I eat it just after the workout or sometime after it? What about before the workout, should I eat something specific?
- +1 y
Don't stress the timing too hard. Just eat a good meal when you are hungry after your workout with some grape juice. Ideally an hour or two after. Know that you can eat carbs during this window and not get fat also.
- +1 y
Before workout a good choice is a piece of fruit and have a full meal an hour or so before that. In general you want to avoid simple carbs except pre and post workout and also carbs before bedtime unless they are very slowly digested carbs like raw oats and that is only if you plan to workout very early in the morning.

natural grape juice does have frutose.. hence the the name frutose come from fruits. some fruits have more frutose than others. its the unnatural grape juice that has high frustose corn syrup
and i just checked eas whey protien it only has 1.5 grams of saturated fat and a 2 lb tub is 22 bucks! it only has 2 grams of sugar
+1 yNo, they're not necessary, but they can be useful. Like everything else, protein supplements have their place. I use them when I'm working out, or even as a meal replacement on the go, because I struggle to get enough protein through my food.
If you're trying to get fit, starving yourself is not the way to go. You need to calculate your required macro nutrients, and plan out your meals based on those.00 Reply

+1 yNope, just eating the correct foods, letting the muscles rest enough, etc can do it just as good.
Egg's are a good source of protein and it doesn't take long to cook them. :)00 Reply

+1 ydepends on your body goals.
if you want to put on muscle you'll need protein after workouts.
if you just want to lift for the sake of lifting, you'll still gain something out of it, you will develop muscle and you will notice it in the mirror, but it won't be as much as if you were providing your body with the nutrition to build more efficiently.00 Reply

You want to get most of your nutrients and protein from clean foods but if you can't then supplements are a good way to give you a boost especially when you need that protein right after you workout because your body is damaged and needs it to repair itself. Though do be careful what supplements and what brands you get because some of them actually are not that good and some are really fantastic like ( legion ).
Also do not starve yourself please do not, you can eat just meet your bodies dietary needs, starving yourself will have the opposite effect you want it to.
If you really need help when it comes to this kind of stuff you can PM me I'm studying personal training, fitness, the human body and nutrition so I can help you out with this kind of stuff.04 Reply- +1 y

steroids
+1 yNope suppliments are only an extra way in gaining protein you can gain the same from of animo acids and celular repair from a healthy well balanced diet ensuring that you are eating enough protein based foods to helo you fully repair the microtears in the muscle fibres.
The only time you NEED to take suppliments if you are on an intesnive diet that requires extra protein intake, you are an athlete that requires the extra protein for helping with physical nutritional demands of a sport or activity or if you for some reason cannot gain the needed protein from your diet then it is reccomended.
anything minus those reasons then its optional :)00 Reply
+1 yThey can supplement your diet, hence the name. For your typical person, they are not necessary. Some brands are pure shit too (Six Star, Body Fortress, Musclepharma, etc.). I'd encourage you to focus on wholesome, clean foods and diet for your nutrients. It's all about diet. Focus on protein-rich foods like lean meats, eggs, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, etc.

I'll eat whole eggs and liquid egg whites. I generally get cartons of liquid egg whites, just for convenience more than anything.

709 opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. I don't think so, I've been working out for years and never taken any supplements.
I think professional athletes use shakes to control exactly how much of which ingredients they consume.
They adapt it to planned training sessions or competitions, to avoid building up fat while having exactly the energy on board they need.
But we're no professionals, are we? If you eat a diet including a wide mix of ingredients and work out, you'll be okay :D00 Replyno, you can do without. but sometimes your diet is not on point and supplements can help you out really well. protein and bacteria dont go together, so factories take protein out of food because it is more profitable due to longer shelf life, this can make it difficult to get all proteins in your body. protein powder is dry and can be preserved for long durations (given that it is in a dry and cool place).

+1 yA good diet is all you need to build muscle, and dont starve yourself. starving yourself will only make your body retain fat. Get a good book on that explains everything you need to know that way you can get the whole picture because their is a lot that gos into it.

+1 yThey're not really important at all. What is important is eating at a calorie surplus in general with a good amount of your calories coming from protein sources while training for hypertrophy.

+1 yNot really. Protein is important, but you can get that from your normal diet. Start your day with some fats (buttered coffee), and make sure you get some steak, tuna, and eggs in your diet. Don't forget some veggies are good in protein, too!
00 ReplySupplements are sub proteins, try to hit ur protein macro through just diet and then supplement it and if u can't. Just use supplements anyway twice a day
