1.4K opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. Form is pretty shaky. Also, arching your back is for power lifting, by using your back and leg drive to help lift the weight from your chest. It also doesn't look like you are breathing correctly, breathe out on the push up - and breathe in on the way down.
03 Reply- Asker+1 y
Leg drive and back arch is good form.
- Asker+1 y
What im doing is lifting for strength. I have bodybuilding days. And i still use an arch on hypertrophy lifts too. Im very thick, thats why the arch looks like that. There is very little space between my lower back and the bench. You can see it in the distance traveled between my chest and lockout.

Also, you arch your back like a chick. Something's not right.16 Reply- Asker+1 y
Since you're cute, and I've never had a problem ill humour you for a second. There's nothing wrong with my arc.
- Asker+1 y
Its really good form. Far better than the average gym bro who lifts their ass of the bench and doesn't even touch their chest. Flat bench puts way too much strain on the shoulders.
- Asker+1 y
That and I've always liked you. You're chill.
- Asker+1 y
Yep. Have a good day.

Just make sure you don't extend your arms all the way to the point where you can lock your elbows. That can damage you over time. Like 1/2 inch from full extension is the best.
16 Reply- Asker+1 y
Weightlifting is damaging your body tho. Thats the whole process.
- +1 y
You don't want to damage your joints. That would stay with you forever.
- Asker+1 y
What do you bench? Just curious
- +1 y
Right now I use 125 pounds for 2 sets of 50 reps each and the last 2 sets are 25 reps. It is too hot for me to be into it much until December. When I get hot, I start getting sick. I try to get through it quickly and then cool off.
- +1 y
Oh, and I put my hands closer to work more on my arms than chest/arms together. Like 6 inches apart. Then if I do chest, I put my hands all the way out, right next to where the weights are on the bar.
Good job, I guess. 😅

You dont have a clue.

You're right, that was A+ form, just how they drew it up. I could really learn a thing or two from you...

Posted it on the misc. My form is better than the average gym bro. I wouldn't listen to a word you say unless you're benching 3 plates

Im telling you, you dont what you're talking about when it comes to arching. What you do i dont care.
- +1 y
I know there's a school of thought in powerlifting that thinks it's a good technique, to shorten your range of motion, but I don't subscribe to that. I'm also not a power lifter, so there's that too. Do you, bud, it's your back not mine. Cheers.
- Asker+1 y
Its to take stress off the shoulders. But again you dont lift.
- +1 y
Good stuff, Arnold. 3/155 is some ill shit, I ain't messing with you.
- Asker+1 y
That's all you got? Come back to me when you learn to bench.
- +1 y
Dude, I'm really just busting your balls, I don't give a fuck what you do or don't do. All I'm saying is that I've been lifting weights probably almost or longer than you've been alive, before "do you even lift?" was a twinkle in our eyes, and I got my personal trainer certification 12 years ago in 2004, and the methods I was taught to safely bench press do no include arching your back. But I'm also not a bodybuilder or competitive lifter, I trained for sports, namely football. So maybe some meat stick on the Internet is telling you it's a great idea, but the way I was taught is that if you need to be taking strain off non-targeted muscles then you're lifting too heavy. Again, I'm just trying to be fit, not be the gorilla that throws the most weight around at the gym. Not sure why you're so riled up.
- Asker+1 y
Well when someone thinks theyre entitled to say my way is better, im going to defend myself and say this way is done for a reason. If you're a personal trainer you should know everyone does things differently, because we're not all built the same. I dont know who'd hire you if you dont even know the basics.
- +1 y
I'm not saying it's "better", and fine by me if you want to defend your side, that's what debates are all about. And I'm not a personal trainer anymore, I'm in a more lucrative business now, that was some scrub job I had in my 20s. But between my training and a lot of friends who were exercise science/kinesiology majors, I haven't met one yet that thinks the arched back bench is a good idea. If you're hearing different, then do your thing, I'm not claiming to have all the answers. But you asked a question about your bench form, and I gave you my honest opinion. You can just take it or leave it without getting pissy about it, it doesn't bother me one bit if you decide I don't know what I'm talking about. And it's true about different builds and whatnot, we have to find a form that works for us. But I'm also from a school of thought that thinks powerlifting in general is terrible for your body over the long term. Just do you, I ain't mad at ya.

Again you dont have a clue - +1 y
You're kind of making my point for me. It says right there that it's controversial, it's not like it says "99% of doctors say you should arch your back." And again, those key words "bodybuilder" and "power lifter"... I'm neither of those, and I'm not qualified to train them. And yes, nobody's back is going to be COMPLETELY flat, your lower back will naturally slightly arch and not touch the bench. I don't know man, this is apparently something you feel strongly about and a hill you want to die on, and that's fine, my life will be completely the same whether you arch your back or not. We can sit here and trade links supporting our respective positions, but I really don't care enough to. No disrespect intended to you, and I'm not trying to insult the 155, I'm the last guy to tell someone to lift real heavy. Half the weight and twice the form, I always say. But the instant someone says "do you even lift" I go into troll-defense mode, so if you were serious, I'm not knocking your weight...
- +1 y
... I don't care if you only lift the bar. There was a day when I could only bench the bar too, who cares? But we'll just have to agree to disagree on the arching. I get the science concepts behind it, but it just doesn't sit right with me and a lot of others. All good, man, just keep it in the gym. Good luck and stay healthy.
- Asker+1 y
You spend way too much time on here. I never said you have to arch your back. And nowhere does it say its controversial. If you look at Layne Nortons arch and mine its exactly the same.
- Asker+1 y
Any idiot can get certified.
- +1 y
I'm not really concerned about the amount of time you think I spend here. Actually dealing with a very difficult health situation with my girlfriend, if you really need to know, and most of my down time is spent taking care of her, so I'm on here killing time. So try not be an asshole about it, please and thanks.
LITERALLY from the Layne Norton article you linked:
"BACK ARCH
This is a little bit of a controversial topic, especially among bodybuilders. Many bodybuilders think that arching your back is just a powerlifting move, but arching your lower back will actually help you maintain a neutral spine and keep your back tight and protected as you press.
If you're not into powerlifting, your back arch doesn't need to be that exaggerated. However, always keep a slight arch in your lower back. If you're a powerlifter, arch your back as much as you can to minimize the distance the bar has to travel." - Asker+1 y
"but arching your lower back will actually help you maintain a neutral spine and keep your back tight and protected as you press."
Look at his arch, mine looks exactly the same. Again you dont know what you're talking about. - Asker+1 y
I have to go lift weights now. To get stronger, and work on my form some more. You have fun telling people on GAG your way or living is better.
- +1 y
"Any idiot can get certified."
Really don't know what your issue is, guy. I'm WAYYYYYYY down the list of certified people to speak on powerlifting and bodybuilding, and I don't know any serious lifters outside of pro athletes who even employ trainers, the clientele is usually tubby middle aged people who didn't hit the gym until they were 45 and their doctor said they need to lower their cholesterol. The point is, you can discredit me all you like, but you're the one asking about bodybuilding advice on GAG, so how serious are you? Or do you just come on here to tell people they don't lift because the Internet said that's a funny and productive way for Millenials to make use of their time?🙄 Really got no beef with you and I don't care if you think I'm an idiot or a genius. I'm simply not in the arched back bench press camp, that's all. Mind blowing that you're this fired up, maybe you should mix in some yoga to get your mind right. - +1 y
Fantastic, and I wish you all the best with that. Never told you to not get strong. Work on whatever form you feel is right. You just might want to work on how you handle differing opinions or you're going to be in for a tough life.
- Asker+1 y
Im not fired up at all. You keep writing paragraphs acting like all emotional like a woman because i said do you even lift. Thats your problem not mine.
- +1 y
Not emotional at all. And if you seem to know me as well as you think to speak on the amount of time I spend on here, you'd know that all my answers are long as fuck, that's just how I roll. Love it or kick rocks. But I'm an adult, so I'm not going to throw junior high barbs around insulting people's masculinity because that's what children do. I'll be over here adulting if you decide you want to come correct and have a discussion like a grown man.
