Do you think "fat & happy" people are just lazy?

Are they just trying to justify their looks because they don't want to change anything about themselves? Or do you think they should try to better their looks?

Personally, when I think of an overweight person words such as "lazy", "self-indulgent" and "glutton" spring to mind. And, well, for the majority of overweight people, this is true. (the minority being people with medical conditions that result in there being no alternative to being overweight)

For those without medical conditions resulting in their 'state' there is nothing stopping them exercising apart from sheer laziness. I am a regular at a gym, I enjoy fitness, and quite regularly I see those that would fit into the category of "fat" making a concerted effort to loose weight and I think - good for them!

The point is, most fat people are lazy in a general term.

I think the phrase "fat and happy" was meant for a time long passed. At a certain time, if you were fat, that meant you were wealthy. In some cultures, it still means that. I think society turned on fat people when too many of them came about. It's a product of decadence, I think.

I don't think fat people are necessarily lazy, though. I know fat people that are and I know others that work their ass off (not literally of course) day in and day out.

Many of those people, I know, would also like to lose a few pounds. I'm not talking about them. Just the ones that specifically are overweight and "happy" with their weight, the ones that act like they are the sexiest things in the world while gorging on McDonalds.

This is just my observation of course, but the ones I'm referring seem content with their weight. They don't care about losing anything. The ones that are really annoying are the ones that complain and don't do anything about it.

I saw a girl on TV that was pushing 300 lbs and she was comparing herself to a diamond. "People want bigger diamonds, so men want bigger women." Those kinds of people, huh? Even then, I still don't feel anything towards her. If that's how she wants to be, so be it.

Yes. I truly believe overweight-obese are lazy. You CAN'T be fat when you only consume 1600 calories and workout everyday. People may say they have a "slow metabolism" but unless you've gone for months with only eating 1300-1600 cals a day on top of working out (eg skipping rope for 30 mins) you don't have a slow metabolism, you just prefer eating and not exercising. Nothing wrong with it but at least admit it.

They don't have to do anything they don't want to do and I'm fine with people being overweight/obese.

Slow metabolism is possible without that stuff you mentioned. Have you seen skinny people that eat like an obese person that but gain no weight? What made their metabolism extremely fast if they don't exercise?

Do you even count calories? If you don't maybe you should start. People often over or under estimate what they're eating. You may have a slower metabolism but really, the only thing holding you back is you. Some people do have to work harder, yes. But I guarantee if you're dedicated, you count EVERY cal you eat, stopping at 1600, and you skip rope for 30mins every day you WILL lose weight. If you want the perfect body you will get it.

The only that changes your metabolism is chemicals/hormones and energy expenditure. You're either a 16 year old devouring entire pizzas or you work out a lot, or eat little. There is nothing in this world I know of that can change your metabolism besides that. Some supplements have marginal effects... that's just about it.

lol You don't have to be insane and count calories unless you want a "perfect" body. You can get a decent one without stressing out about eating one to many bites of your sandwich on Tuesday.

SnackG I was that skinny person. The reason is because their body is either growing or their muscle is eating everything. When people stop growing and they continue eating what they eat they get fat. Also taking estrogen helps you gain weight, I think it slows down the metabolism But even on estrogen if you burn more than you consume you WILL lose weight. Again, I know from experience.

SnackG it's not insane at all. You can estimate all you want the only way you'll know you are right is by calculating. It's the most fool proof way instead of "I think if I eat this much I'll be fine". It gives you limits so you can discipline yourself. OR you could just go into invasive surgery... which is more insane? Putting yourself at risk by going under the knife or counting some numbers?

I think they're both ridiculous. I'm fat and in no way condoning it being a good thing. I'm just saying it's not hard to eat less than you used to and work out and get in shape. You don't have to read the back of the box all the time. You have to realize how quickly a fat person drops weight(at least I do) from just going from eating too much and sitting on their ass all the time to just eating normal portions and even moderate exercise.

This. It's really not a huge difficulty to lose weight for *most* overweight people; counting calories isn't necessary.

SnackG maybe since it's a drastic change for your body that it works for you. But counting calories can be important, for eg. if you're not eating enough it can have devastating effects on your body. *I* recently went on a diet and eating what I thought was enough (I calculate everything at the end of the day) I only managed to eat 1200cals while working out (burning approx 552cals) - that is BAD.

I'm not saying that being fat is bad! Too each his own. I just said that fat people are lazy.

To continue on how bad that it can be (didn't have room) if you don't eat enough or in your case, (since you don't know whether or not you're eating enough) if you lose weight too quickly (over 2lbs/1kg), you get a WHOLE heap of mess you DON'T want. This is why counting cals is so important. Your body will go into starvation mode and you will lose more muscle than you would hope, your body may shut down some of your organs (kidneys for eg).

You will not go into starvation mode if you don't eat enough. That's a joke. You go into "starvation mode" from doing exactly that - starving. Not from eating on the low side of things for a couple days.

No, it's really not. Your body needs a certain amount of calories to function properly - you know like to keep your organs working. The 1200 is a rough estimate; for some people it might be more or less but once you go under that it can be dangerous, but really if you are eating only that much for a couple weeks/months. If you're not eating enough for your body to function then of course your going to be screwing up your body.

Actually at that point your body will consume your muscle. Your muscle is what burns calories so it'll get rid of that first.

No, that's a terrible joke of bullsh*t information being fed to you by false sources. If cavemen burned muscle every time they were on a calorie deficit, all of their muscles would drop off after not hunting for a few days. Your body prioritizes fat loss over muscle loss. I lost 85 pounds myself over about a year, and I have more or less the same amount of muscle as I did then.

You only lost less than 2lbs a week - so how is that even remotely bad? No, honestly it does happen. Especially if you've been working for months on gaining your muscle, you lose it all if you lose weight too quickly. It has happened to a lot of people. Look up "how to lose weight without losing muscle" I'm sure you can find stories about it. I did. Look, if you're eating less than your BMR then of course you're not eating enough! But you didn't lose enough weight to cause concern.

It doesn't have to do with calories. It has to do with protein. If you're getting a proper protein intake, your muscles don't dwindle. It's just harder to do that on lower calories. Are muscles made out of fat? Hell no. It's when people cut down in their diet and don't eat a bodybuilders diet that they lose their muscles. Go look up Martin Berkhan, he fasts for 16 hours a day and is f***ing ripped.

Everyone should try to be healthy if they can, but that doesn't mean trying to conform to society's depiction of 'perfect' (read: boring clone).

If someone is chubby, though not attractive by many people's standards, there is no reason they shouldn't be happy with exactly who they are.

If someone is so obese it's causing them health problems, then they shouldn't be happy as far as their health is concerned. But that shouldn't stop them from being happy with other areas of their lives.

I don't think that actually exists, at least for long-term happiness. It's more that they find days where they don't constantly think about their bodies and they find happiness in life at that point. Later though, they start thinking about how overweight they are and the risks that come with it and worry about it and aren't very happy (even though they're still reaching for happiness).

Either way, I don't think that makes them lazy. Typically they've excelled somewhere else in their life, just not in their looks. And no matter what you think, it is extremely difficult to become a healthy weight again after you've gained some. Actually the more you have to lose, the harder it is to stick to it.

Most are lazy only a select few have medical issues or an extremely slow metabolism.

Everyone metabolism slows down with age (except in my family) that means eat less exercise more.

The Harris-Benedict Equation for calculating an individual's basal metabolic rate shows only a decreased in 5 calories/day expenditure per year. That means that a 50 year old man only uses 200 less calories than a 10 year old boy due to his age. The idea that when people grow out of their teens they can't lose weight any more is a myth.

Then you were probably more active back then, had a different body composition, more muscle mass, etc. Your body may have naturally been much more adept at burning calories, but the actual effect of age on metabolism is minimal. Go do research before calling bullsh*t.

What do you mean? I used to be able to eat what I wanted and drop a couple of pounds by almost doing nothing. Now I can't eat anything and I have to work much harder to show any improvement.

But you know it all, you're in your early 20's and read a book which agrees with your preconceived notions.

I only suggested that you live it before you judge, being fit right out of HS is really not much of an accomplishment, so don't break your arm patting yourself on the back.
