I have a question for those who wear corrective lenses: do you wear them all the time? And do you find yourself to be more reliant on them then?

I guess that was 2 questions, lol. Mrloves2learn was prescribed corrective lenses about 5 years ago. I don’t wear them so I don’t understand them. He typically only wears them at work. Sometimes while driving, especially at night he asks me to read street signs for him.

I keep telling him he should just wear the glasses all the time. I think they are sexy and they help him see better. He is afraid if he wears them all the time he will become too reliant on them and his vision without the glasses will be worse. Is there any truth to his statement?

My frames are Carrara, and of similar style to those shown in the photo.

My vision gradually worsened over the years to the point that it is far easier for me to always wear my glasses. I also have prescription driving glasses, shooting glasses with lenses in both brown and yellow tint (yellow for low-light), and computer glasses, which work fantastic while sitting a few feet in front of monitors.

My sister's vision is the same as my own (and our mother). My sister refuses to wear her glasses full time. When we go out to lunch, she can't read the menu and will ask for my glasses, which is irritating!

The truth is once a person approaches their 40s their eye sight changes. I needed glasses at your age and then every year my vision either slightly changes or stays the same. I am now 47, and now I need progressive lenses for both seeing things close up and far away. I wear my glasses all day. I am not a candidate for contacts because I have Hydrocephalus of the brain. I took this picture at the eye doctor's the last time I went.

I'm near sighted and have had glasses since I was 7. I wear them all the time except occasionally when I'm just walking around the house. My vision isn't good enough to drive etc. without them.

Sounds like Mrlovestolearn has pretty good vision that just needs a little help, so he can wear them or not.

FYI... as we get older, the eyeball hardens a bit, which makes most people more far sighted and less near sighted. That's why it's important to see the eye doctor at least once a year because your corrective prescription could change.

Your hubs us right about wearing them. His eyes will prefer the glasses over time. If he doesn't need them, it's better for the eye muscles.

by the way, all of this is what my optometrist and ophthalmologist has explained to me over the many years of wearing glasses. I'm a regular customet.

Years ago I had cataract surgery. There was a complication during the surgery which required more eye surgery and I ended up with one eye best for distance and the other best for reading. Really worked well as my mind adapted well. However, time has taken its toll and my eyesight has changed. Both near and distant are fuzy to me. I have a prescription that I have not yet filled for progressive lenses. I will be getting them soon, but i remember earlier problems with the progressive lenses. As you are going down stairs you look at your feet and what is ahead, so you are constantly looking throught the different corrections and it can throw you off, which is dangerous on stairs. So I will have to go back to being cautious on stairs, but I need the correction pretty bad now.

I was recommended contact lenses last month to which I just laughed and said no. Not for something as simple as reading.
Low and behold I've only been using my glasses a month now and I don't necessarily really require them, even when reading, but I do end up using them about half the time when reading, driving, just in general, playing guitar, etc.
Actually, fun fact: I actually cannot play my violin without my glasses. I see eight strings otherwise. I mean I guess it's not impossible to play, but it's certainly fucking difficult.

I have glasses prescribed for distance reading and seeing. I don’t wear my glasses all the time- probably because I got them at a rather late age- so I had been used to my bad vision for so long that I didn’t necessarily even know it was bad vision.
Nonetheless, yes there is truth to the statement. Your eyes become “lazy” when you wear glasses for a long time. Your eyes become used to the assistance that the lenses provide and hence without them- they’re lazy in working as hard as they did before to see.

LOVES, I want to make a suggestion to Mr. Loves. Tell him to TRY to get mono-vision lenses and try to get accustomed to wearing them. This means one eye can read CLOSE, and the other eye reads DISTANCE. Some people have a difficult time wearing them and getting used to your brain making the change from reading close and reading distance. I made the switch and it is a natural thing for me. If and when he needs Lense replacement due to cataracts, (years away) he can have the same lenses and it will be a 'piece of cake' to make the adjustment.

Have him just try it and see if he can get used to it. HIs Optometrist will fit him with the mono-vision lenses

I wear glasses but not all the time, usually when out, tend not to bother with them around the house. Don't wear them for reading or anything like that. I've been advised that over wearing can weaken eye muscles because you can become reliant on them.

I wore them much less over the pandemic lockouts as I wasn't in the office as much, and I did find that my sight without them was a little better than normal. It got explained to me that like every muscle in the body, the Exrtaocular muscles need exercise too and glasses tend to relax them.

it’s not that his vision without the glasses will be worse… it’s just that he would’ve gotten used to having good vision with his glasses that he starts noticing how bad his vision actually was prior to getting the glasses when he’s not wearing them.


I wear glasses, and I’m guilty of not wearing it all the time, but I did work on making it a habit to put them on first thing when I wake up in the morning so now I’m finally used to them and I definitely notice the difference when I’m not wearing them lol

When I was 16 I was told I was nearsighted and would need glasses for distant vision. I would wear hard contact lenses until I started working out! Then I would remove them and wear glasses until that evening. In 2000 I started wearing extended wear soft contacts and finally, In 2015 I had cataract surgery on my left eye, and then in 2019 my right eye. This surgery left me with 20 20 vision and today the only glasses I wear are readers!

I've had mine since I was 17. They are for distance only and I don't use them for computer work. My prescription hasn't changed much over the years, so I don't think a person becomes reliant on them. I believe wearing them is more healthy than constantly squinting which can lead to headaches. I've tried bifocals and progressives and can't get used to them.

My dad’s prescription hasn’t changed since he was 11. He says things are just crisper with them. He can pass his drivers test without them.

I don't know, but my experience was this. I was prescribed glasses when I was 11 after seeing a real optometrist, the glasses were as prevention of an at the time insignificant problem and the doc said that it could be corrected if I used them every day... I didn't use them, at all, because I was seeing perfectly. The with time (at 17) I realize: "Fuck, I can't see at distance" lmao. Turns out that even if you see well, you're actually putting extra work on your eyes. My brother went through the same, but he is not like me, haha. He'll be able to stop using them daily around next year.
Use your glasses, don't be an idiot, like me.

Yeah. I have to wear something all the time, unless I’m doing something that doesn’t require me to see more than two feet away. I prefer contacts because then I can have better peripheral vision. His vision is probably like mine was when I was younger when I just had to wear glasses to drive but your vision won’t get worse by wearing glasses. When it was 20/70, I barely ever wore them but they got worse even without wearing glasses to 20/200 and they’ve been the same for the past 20 years even with wearing contacts and glasses.

I wear them now more since the pandemic because wearing glasses + mask is annoying. I wear contacts when I go to work or when I go out to meet friends or whatever, but I wear glasses in my everyday life like going to the grocery store or run errands etc.

So far, I've found that they either don't do shit or they make my eyes even worse so, I never wear them unless I absolutely have to!! Most often, I'll just use a magnifying glass! I wear them more than I did. I can't read without them or use the computer. I wear them while I am teaching. Most of the time I wear prescription sunglasses when I drive. I do not wear them at the gym and never during sex.

I’ve been wearing glasses since 1998 and once my vision reached 4.25 in each eye it stayed and didn’t get worse. Eyes of course can get worse but not wearing glasses while driving is kind of idiotic, especially with other people in the vehicle. If he’s that concerned he could get corrective surgery or just wear contacts. Both are relatively inexpensive solutions.

I need to wear mine. I hate being in pictures with them. I can barely see the tv that is 8 feet and 3 inches away from me or a monitor that is 10 inches away from my face. I have the worse vision in the family and it's not even genetic. I have normal prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses because my eyes get worse with contact with light.

Yes. And no. I will often not even put them on for hours if I haven’t left the house or needing distant vision. Usually a sign a headache is coming on though.

I've worn them for years and am pretty fortunate I can leave them in for days on end and my eyes don't get irritated. I wear the monthly wears and probably wear them for a month to 5 weeks total before changing them, but do wear glasses for a day or two in between changing to a new pair... actually I have glasses on right now. I can't stand wearing glasses though, such a pain in the ass to keep clean, deal with the glare of computer screens or the sun and they don't stay in place.

Yes your eyes do get worse wearing them. Look up eye exercises. My mom did it and it helped her.

But some people that won't work for. Like me it would never work. I am one of them, that has eyes that always changes its shape.

If your eyes are like mine. Its only going to get worse and worse over time.

But I hear there is now a eye surgery that can reverse that now. That's something to look into as well.
