I'm trying to quit or at least cut down on smoking. Is my approach right?

I started smoking regurally 4 months ago. I mostly did it because I'd just moved in a new town to study and I was bored at home. I bought a pack and smoked a few cigarretes, thinking it was just a one-time thing, but I was wrong.

I ended up liking it and started smoking on a regular basis. I did from half to a whole pack a day and even though I had made some attemps to quit, I just didn't have any motivation to do so. I simply didn't want to yet. However, last Wednesday I visited my parents for Easter. They have no idea I smoke and for that reason I rarely have a chance to do so as long as I stay with them. I thought that's a good opportunity to reduce the amount I smoke and it kinda worked.

The first 3 days I went without smoking once. The urges were there but the were not that strong and I was able to resist them. When day 4 came around I couldn't hold myself any more and decided to sneak a few puffs just to make them stop, by buying a single cigarrete and smoking like 1/3 of it before throwing it away. This did calm my body down, but the very next day the same thing happened. I ended up doing it today as well, since even though this did stop my urges momentarely, they only became stronger the more I did it.

Is this normal? Can I still quit like this or am I just setting myself up for dissapointment?
