Why is the National Health Service always short of staff in the UK?

Because of numbers mainly.

there are between 1.3 and 1.5 million people working in the NHS.

if you consider how many people leave and join per month it’s a shit load.

Then you have things like working Bank as opposed to working within the hospital normal staff.

A lot of people take advantage of being locums rather than full time.

At times there is a lot of people retiring and needing replaced, however as with most organisations, budgets need checked against head counts.

There are areas that are grossly under funded and areas that likely are over funded.

Recently it’s down to Brexit and removal of those not allowed to work in the UK.

Also a qualified nurse in the UK can move overseas for better pay or work private.

Also,,, backend of 2 years of hell on earth for frontline staff, a lot are burnt out and leaving due to stress, PTSD and a bunch of other reasons.

short version, underfunding, stress, sheer size and numbers of the NHS, retirement etc.
